Graduate Studies

The School of Graduate Studies, Research & Entrepreneurship leads and manages the development and delivery of graduate courses in line with best practices and standards. The University’s graduate courses that are delivered through our colleges and faculties listed below are designed to meet the needs of our students with convenient delivery modalities and various matriculation options, including prior learning assessment.

Graduate courses offered include: Post-Graduate Diplomas; taught masters and doctoral degrees, as well as research degrees (MPhils and PhDs). A Graduate Students’ Handbook, a Thesis and Dissertation Manual, and other resources are available to provide important information to students concerning policies, procedures and other requirements governing graduate courses at the University.

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Taught Courses

The minimum requirement for admission to a taught graduate degree course of study is a GPA of at least 2.7, or lower second class honours degree, or its equivalent.

Research Degrees

For research degrees, a first class or second class honours degree or equivalent qualification. The normal entry requirement for the degree of MPhil is a Bachelors degree in a discipline. The normal entry requirement for the degree of PhD is a Masters degree in a discipline which is appropriate to the proposed research, and which has included research training and a research project.

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

An applicant who does not meet the above requirement for taught courses of study may matriculate with an Associate Degree, Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree (with a GPA below the required score) or professional certification from a recognized/accredited tertiary institution, provided that he/she submits a satisfactory Portfolio for Graduate Matriculation (PGM)detailing at least five (5) years of experience relevant to the proposed course of study.

Higher Degrees by Research

The University offers the opportunity for individuals to pursue higher degrees by research based on specific interests.  

Graduate Assistantship

A Graduate Assistantship is a temporary, junior academic appointment of a fixed term involving responsibilities of assisting faculty in teaching, research and administrative services.

Categories of Assistantships
  1. Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)
  2. Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA)
  3. Graduate Administrative Assistant (GAA)
Eligibility Criteria

Only registered graduate students of the University of Technology, Jamaica are eligible for appointment as Graduate Assistants. Students should have the minimum GPA of 3.0 and maintain good academic standing during their course of study.
