UTech, Ja Staff Celebrated at 54th Annual Staff Awards Ceremony

The University of Technology, Jamaica, led by the People Division, paid homage to over 300 staff members for their unwavering service to the institution during its 54th Annual Staff Awards Ceremony held on January 15, 2026, at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium. 

The annual ceremony was held following a one-year hiatus. It was hosted under the theme “Celebrating Service, Our People, Our Strength,” and recognized academic, administrative, technical, and ancillary staff for their long and dedicated service to the institution, spanning 10 to 45 years. These awards covered the years 2024 and 2025.

Collaborating for the future of UTech, Jamaica

In his welcome remarks, Dr. Kevin Brown, President, UTech, Jamaica, underscored the significant role members of faculty and staff continue to play in the university’s over 67 years of growth and national impact. The President stated that the transformational future to which the university aspires will only be achieved when all staff work in unison.

Highlighting progress made in tackling various institutional challenges in recent times, including the successful resolution of long-standing compensation issues, Dr. Brown noted that success came through constant collaboration and dialogue. “October 1, 2024, is a milestone in the history of this university.” Dr. Brown noted, praising the collaborative work among all three staff unions – UTASU, UTASA and the UAWU working with the Minister of Education and the UTech, Jamaica management team for the historic signing of all three compensation agreements on that date. “Those agreements have led to the payouts that you have received, almost $5 billion in retroactive has been paid,” the President stated. He thanked staff for “staying the course” and for the resilience and perseverance that they have demonstrated in the execution of their duties.

The Strength of our People

During her remarks, Mrs. McGregor-Jackson, Vice President and Chief People Officer, commended the honorees for their years of service. She also expressed appreciation to the families of staff members and corporate partners of UTech, Jamaica, for contributing in their own way to the continued success of the university. Specifically addressing the awardees, Mrs. McGregor-Jackson stated, “Your years of service reflect dedication, resilience, and a deep belief in the mission of this university,” adding, “Through your daily efforts, often carried out quietly and without expectation, you have helped to build, sustain, and advance this university. Today’s ceremony is a powerful reminder that our people truly are our strength,” she affirmed, urging  staff  to continue serving with excellence.

A Promise to Serve with Excellence

n an inspirational keynote address conveying faith, purpose and service, Dr. Sasha Shim-Hue, Regional Director, HEART/NSTA Trust, reminded staff members of their commitment to serve through knowledge and excellence.  She emphasized the significance of commitment, stating, “I want you to know that God is pleased.” She continued, “UTech is built on the shoulders of your hard work. Without you, there could not be a UTech.” She encouraged the team to move forward with a collaborative spirit and to further the university’s track record of excellence through positive mentorship. Concluding her keynote address, Dr. Shim-Hue challenged the University Community to remain aligned with the purpose and values of the institution.

Honorees’ Response

Responding on behalf of the awardees, Professor Sonia Richards-Malcom, College of Health Sciences who received a long service award for 20 years, thanked the university’s leadership for recognising the long-standing service of its staff. She also acknowledged colleagues for their support, while expressing gratitude and pride in being able to contribute to the university’s legacy of success.

President’s Award for Excellence in Research

Dr. Kevin Brown, President, UTech, Jamaica, presents Dr. Christine Fray, Associate Professor, College of Health Sciences, with the 2025 President’s Research Award. Dr. Fray was recognized for her contributions to health research on obesity, chronic diseases, and gender-based violence.

Long Service Awards
