In presenting the 2023 Jamaica Nurses’ Association of Florida’s Scholarships to four UTech, Jamaica Nursing students on Monday, November 27, 2023, President, University of Technology, Jamaica, Dr. Kevin Brown encouraged the recipients to give back to Jamaica and their institution. “Well done, Jamaica needs nurses” Dr. Brown noted. “I hope you will spend some time in Jamaica. I know that overseas, there is a huge pull, but if you can give back to Jamaica that would be fantastic,” he added. “I hope wherever you go once you have successfully finished your course, you will remember UTech as well…and even if you stay in Jamaica, you can give back as well” encouraged Dr. Brown.
The President also applauded the JNAF for lending their support to nursing education at UTech, Jamaica. “It is good to see that the nurses who live in Florida remember the institution and are giving these scholarships to you to support your studies here.”
The JNAF, established 40 years ago, consists of nurses within the diaspora, some of whom are UTech, Jamaica and CAST alumni and who continue to work closely with the University. As part of its commitment to serving communities and the underserved, the non-profit organization disburses annual scholarships to nursing students in Jamaica. In December 2022, The JNAF presented scholarships to UTech, Jamaica’s Cadean Smith and Theresa Williams who were pursuing the BSc. in Nursing and Midwifery course of study at the Caribbean School of Nursing, College of Health Sciences.
