T he Most Honourable Edward Seaga ON, PC served as Prime Minister of Jamaica between 1980 and 1989. He has also played outstanding and exten- sive roles as a pioneer in numerous spheres of national life in Jamaica. Among many other things, the Most Hon. Seaga has placed his authoritative, brilliant mark in areas of institution-building, economic enterprise, cultural and religious develop- ment, sports, music, and community organization. The University remains grateful for his contributions to the nation, and will treasure his legacy through this as award, as we recall his indomitable spirit, his love for people, and, above all, his love for Jamaica. The Most Honourable Seaga served with distinction as Chancellor of the University of Technology, Jamaica, from 2010 to the time of his passing, and was Pro-Chancel- lor from 2008 to 2010. Working with the team at the University, he was a guiding force in bringing about a number of notable achievements during the period of his tenure. Throughout this period, we consistently benefitted from his leadership and expertise, wealth of knowledge, sharp intellect and his sound judgement. In presiding at our Graduation Ceremonies and our Annual General Meetings of the Council, and in giving lectures and presen- tations, the Most Honourable Seaga inspired our students and enhanced the University as a place of learning and intel- lectual analysis. The Academic Board at its meeting held August 15, 2019 approved the establish- ment of an academic award in the name of the University’s second Chancellor, The Most Honourable Edward Seaga ON, PC who died on May 28, 2019. The award is given in recognition of his outstanding national service and contribution to the development of the University. It is to be presented at the annual Congregation of Graduates and took effect for the Graduating Class of 2018/2019. The recipient of the Award is the First Class Honours Undergraduate Student with the highest overall GPA in the 2019/2020 academic year.
