University of Technology, Jamaica 96 In her presentation, Mrs. Alma Mock Yen charted the course of Jamaican entertainment; from its fledging beginnings in mockery of the plantocracy during slavery, to the robust, uniquely Jamaican productions now extant. Mrs. Mock Yen delivered a rich description of the evolution of local radio drama recounting the distinctive contributions of folklorist, writer and cultural icon Louise Bennett-Coverley, Sir Philip Sherlock from the University of the West Indies and local actors such as the veteran comedian Oliver Samuels with the advent of the Oliver at Large TV series followed by Royal Palm Estate, a local soap opera series. Unveiling of National Monuments at UTech, JA. On September 19, 2019, The Centre, in collaboration with Mrs. Joan Francis, Museum and Heritage Preservation Officer, unveiled the official Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) plaques for four of the designated heritage sites on the Papine Campus. These four buildings were the Drawing Room, the Cynthia Shako Early Childhood Education and Day Care Centre, Bryan’s Book Store and the Centre for the Arts. MARKETING DEPARTMENT Student Ambassador Programme Nine (9) students were selected to participate in the Student Ambassador Programme. The newly appointed student ambassadors were formally welcomed to the programme at an induction ceremony on February 7, 2020. Student Ambassadors will participate in University events and activities including promotional campaigns in print, television, radio and social media, lead tours of the Campus, as well as assist new students in transitioning to university life. Additionally, Student Ambassadors will participate in student recruitment activities on and off the Campus. Video Production Three (3) videos were produced for the University during the reporting period. These videos are: y Sports at UTech, Jamaica y Trudian Dalley – Student Ambassador y Neethu Manianghattu & Cleveland Tomlinson – Student Ambassadors Distinguished Visitors’ Mural A new mural, depicting photographs of distinguished visitors to the University of Technology, Jamaica over the life of the institution, was unveiled at a special ceremony on October 23, 2019 at the entrance to the Shared Facilities Building, Papine Campus. The mural was unveiled by Mrs. Carla Seaga, distinguished Jamaican and widow of late former Prime Minister and Chancellor, UTech, Jamaica, the Most Honourable Edward Seaga, ON, PC, distinguished; Ambassador the Hon. Burchell Whiteman, OJ, former Minister of Education and former Acting President of the University, and Professor Stephen Vasciannie, CD, University President. Some of the visits depicted on the mural have marked or coincided with significant historical milestones in the areas of academics, culture, sports and infrastructural developments. Among the visitors on the mural are notable global and local iconic personalities, including members of the British Royal Family, several Advancement Division Cont’d.
