University of Technology, Jamaica 95 Courts to serve as guest speaker at the Accounting Seminar 2019/2020 meeting on January 23, 2020. CENTRE FOR THE ARTS The Centre for the Arts continues to carry out its mandate of providing education in the visual and performing arts, and facilitating cultural training and professional development through elective and performing societies. The Centre continued to support the cultural needs of the University and wider populace through the staging of outreach activities such as, cultural productions, presentations and consultation, providing professional performances by UTech, Jamaica Art and Theatre Ensemble, workshops geared towards students, staff and creative industries professionals, facility rental and guided tours of the Caribbean Sculpture Park. Visual and Performing Arts Programmes The Centre currently offers three electives: Introduction to Dance, Drama and Theatre Arts and Introduction to Music. The number of students enrolled in the elective programs for both semesters one and two totaled 91. The Centre is on a mission to enhance the level of professionalism presented by the performing societies and as such the students are benefiting from more training by the various experts in the respective fields. To further this endeavor, the Centre has been granted a Performing Arts account to give students access to funds they have contributed as dues to fund activities to enhance their group. The account will also facilitate depositing funds for fundraising projects. The Choir performed at a variety of University events throughout the reporting period. The Centre introduced a new Fitness Dance Programme, hosted by Mr. Kevin Moore, dance tutor and principal dancer and choreographer, National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC), for UTech, Jamaica staff. The class commenced on January 10, 2020 and was oversubscribed. Jamaica Cultural Development Commission Festival Competition The UTech, Jamaica Dance Ensemble, with coaching from Mr. Kevin Moore, entered the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Competitions, where they advanced to parish finals. The Competition was cancelled in March 2020. Festival of the Arts and Cultural Showcase On November 21, 2019 the Centre hosted a panel discussion on the Business of Film and lecture under the theme “From Wave to Reel: The Evolution of Radio Drama to Film”. The lecture was presented by Adjunct Lecturer and former University of the West Indies Radio Tutor at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), Mrs. Alma Mock Yen. Ms. Analisa Chapman, President of the Jamaica Film and Television Association (JAFTA) and Mr. Kevin Jackson, writer, animator and president of Jamaica Animation Nation Network (JANN), hosted an interactive session and gave students valuable advice on how to break into the film industry in Jamaica. The UTech, Jamaica Choir performs at the 2019 Graduation Ceremony held at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium, UTech, Jamaica Papine Campus. Veteran media and communications trainer Alma Mock Yen delivers her presentation on “From Wave to Reel: The Evolution of Radio Drama to Film” at the University’s annual Festival of the Arts, hosted by the Centre for the Arts at the Shared Facilities Building, Papine Campus on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at the Shared Facilities Building, Papine Campus.
