UTech Annual Report 2019-20

University of Technology, Jamaica 85 The Department of Community Service and Development seeks to align its purpose with that of the University of Technology, Jamaica’s mission to positively impact Jamaica and the wider Caribbean through high quality learning opportunities, research and value added solutions to government, industry and communities. This report outlines the major projects undertaken by the community service secretariat, as well as those done by internal and external stakeholders and partners. Generally, the department takes a collaborative approach in an effort to execute the mandate of engendering a positive attitude to volunteerism and promoting outreach activities to facilitate social and economic development within communities. Highlights of the period include staging of the Papine Wellness Fest-which involved a series of health and service fairs, sporting events and a beauty competition which was set to impact 10 communities in Kingston and St Andrew. However due to Covid-19 Pandemic we were only able to visit the Gordon Town and August Town Community where health fairs were held. We also visited the Grants Pen and August Town community where we hosted the football competitions. This year the committee introduced a beauty competition which was done in the August Town Community where ten (10) young ladies participated. Our focus for the UTech Ja Labour Day Project was consistent with the National theme of “Child safety… it’s you, it’s me, it’s all ah we.” We took the opportunity to renovate the sidewalk at the National Water Commission (NWC) Basic School. The school also benefitted from the painting of classrooms and the rehabilitation of the children recreational space. The Annual Community Service Conference was also held which introduces new and returning students to the community service element of the university. Saturday classes for primary, secondary and adult students continue during both regular semesters. These students are prepared for the PEP, CXC and the Grade 9 achievement test. UTech Ja. students and staff volunteer lend of their time and expertise to provide instructions to these students who attend class free of all charges. Faculties, departments and the Students’ Union carried out various outreach initiatives ranging from the Teach The Youth Programme, health fairs, environmental related projects, cancer awareness projects, drives and collection drives to support institutions that facilitate the less fortunate.
