University of Technology, Jamaica 77 Built Environment Conference The Faculty hosted its second International Built Environment two-day conference in November 2019. The conference had two plenary sessions with presentations by Dr Silburn Clarke, CEO, Spatial Innovision Ltd.; Mr Lenworth Kelly, President, Incorporated Master Builders Association of Jamaica; and Mr. Christopher Hamilton, President Jamaica Institution of Engineers. The second plenary session included presentations from the following persons, Ms. Suzanne Stanley, CEO, Jamaica Environmental Trust; Mr. Leonar Francis, Director of Spatial Planning, NEPA; and Arch. Robert Woodstock, Director Harold Morrison, Robert Woodstock Architects. Conference presentations were made by members of faculty in the FOBE as well as members from other faculties and representatives of built environment related agencies both from government and the private sectors. Special Project – Mud House In 2016, Touraterre partnered with the Faculty of The Built Environment/Caribbean School of Architecture to design and build small scale projects with mud. After collaborative approval and contributions from the Coconut Industry Board of Jamaica and the National Environmental Planning Agency, the mud house prototype was completed in January 2020. A mud house workshop was also held with the CSA students in January 2020, and approximately 8 CSA students participated in the design workshop with an equal amount in the implementation project. Exhibitions The Caribbean School of Architecture celebrated its 30th with an Exhibition of Architecture and Urban Design Projects in Jamaica and the Caribbean. The Exhibit showcases Downtown Kingston, Ocho Rios St. Ann, St Kitts and Bridgetown Barbados. A special component of the exhibit was a selection of digital models and drawings of cities and towns from across Caribbean cities researched over the 30 years. Annual Awards Ceremony The Faculty’s Awards ceremony was held on April 10, 2019 at the Papine Campus. Special awards were presented to 90 students, of which twelve (12) were Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Senator the Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., delivering the keynote address at the University of Technology, Jamaica’s 2nd International Built Environment Conference at the Papine Campus on November 7, 2019.
