University of Technology, Jamaica 58 JOINT COLLEGES OF MEDICINE, ORAL HEALTH AND VETERINARY SCIENCES • College of Oral Health Sciences • School of Public Health and Health Technology Dr Mark Edwards Dean A new senior management team (Dean and Vice Dean) was officially appointed for the Joint Colleges of Medicine, Oral Health and Veterinary Sciences during the year under review. This marked the University thrust to streamline some of the activities in the College of Oral Health Sciences (COOHS) based on University’s structure, goals and objectives which were successfully achieved. The Clinical Operations within the College continues to provide critical oral health care and service to the vulnerable and at risks communities. The Joint Colleges has maintained a standard of excellence through the delivery and training of Oral and Public Health Professionals and continued to be a key player in the offering of oral health care services to the wider communities. Students in the College also conducted community projects that resulted in improvements in the sanitary status of communities. The School of Public Health and Health Technology (SPHHT), the only public health training institution in Jamaica, continued to provide training for public health professionals through its four courses of study over the past academic year. The SPHHT is a beacon in the inner city community in which it is located and with limited resources, it continues to produce work ready public health graduates for Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. New Course of Study Letter of Intents were approved by the Academic Board for a Master of Science in Environmental Health with two specializations and Master of Science in Public Health Nursing to be offered by the School of Public Health and Health Technology. The proposals are being developed. ADEX Examination Students from the College sat the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (CDCA)/American Dental Examination Board (ADEX) Examination in November 2019. Community Service The Joint Colleges participated in several community outreach activities across the island. Students in the Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) and Dental Hygiene (DH) courses of study participated in numerous health fairs during the period under review. The COOHS collaborates with non-profit organizations to offer dental service free of cost to children and adult who sometime cannot afford these treatments at clinical and other health facilities. These initiatives are beneficial to students as they get the chance to obtain needed clinical practice hours which forms part of the
