University of Technology, Jamaica 50 STUDENTS’ UNION During the Academic Year 2019/20, the UTech, Jamaica Students’ Union Council was guided by the theme Enhancing the Experience...Creating H.I.S.T.O.R.Y. As such, the Council aimed at improving all traditional events, while embarking upon new and innovative activities. Resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, all events were held either virtually or in a blended mode. The main activities and initiatives executed by the Council during the reporting period are listed below. Student Welfare Support Given the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic, the need for student assistance increased; which resulted in the Council increasing the value of all Semester 1 bursaries as well as approving all applicants. The Council also offered data plan assistance through the Project 100 initiative as well as through a donation from the Grace & Staff Community Development Programme. The Council assisted forty-seven students with laptops, digital tablets and other electronic devices to support their education. The Council also continued its initiative which assisted students located islandwide, with grocery items. This initiative was done through the support of Progressive Grocers, Mega Mart, Grace Kennedy and Liao J supermarket (Mandeville). Community Service Outreach The Council revamped the Teach the Youth Programme and offered lessons online for students aged 2-18 years old. Another outreach activity saw the delivery of over two hundred and fifty grocery packages to targeted families. This donation was made possible by the assistance of UTech, Jamaica staff members.
