UTech, Jamaica’s MA in Media, Culture, and Technology, offered by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies, is a 36-credit interdisciplinary degree. It merges a strong foundation in media and technology with solutions-driven engagements in culture. Students pursue a range of modules that cover theories of culture and society and media technology skill development. Developing skills in content production across multiple platforms and media is one of the critical concerns of this course of study. While doing so it also provides students with a range of adjunct skills, such as the use of digital systems for storing and retrieving cultural content, the drafting of policy at the nexus of culture and digital media production, and the use of intellectual property as a vehicle for the monetization of culture.

Course Details

Informed by the technical orientation and mission of UTech, Jamaica as well as Jamaica’s national development plan, Vision 2030, the course of study seeks to produce graduates who possess the conceptual knowledge and technical skills to:

  1. evaluate the role of media technology in global social and cultural change
  2. innovate in the production, curation, archiving and promotion of creative cultural content across multiple media platforms
  3. lead Caribbean cultural and creative media enterprises
  4. integrate policy concerns into the production of cultural content, and
  5. impact the positive evolution of Caribbean creative industry output through ethical design and use of research.

Mode of Delivery

The MAMCT is offered with most modules being delivered remotely. Face-to-face is reserved optionally for two practical modules, Digital Production Studio, and Digital Storytelling and Media Production, which will be delivered on-site from the UTech, Ja. Papine campus. Students who prefer or need to work remotely will be accommodated in these modules via hybrid modality, once they can demonstrate that they have their own equipment. Research Project, which, depending on students’ interests, may have a practical component, will also be facilitated through independent work in studio on campus or remotely with students’ own equipment.
