Course Details

The Diploma in Electrical Engineering is a three-year course of study designed to develop graduates with the requisite competencies and skills in electrical engineering principles and practices. 

  1. Fundamental Electrical Engineering Principles: Students will gain a solid understanding of the core theories and concepts in electrical circuits, power systems, and electronics. 
  2. Practical Problem-Solving Skills: Hands-on training in laboratories and workshops equips students to apply engineering concepts to solve real-world technical challenges effectively. 
  3. Technical Communication and Teamwork: Emphasis on developing clear communication and collaborative skills to function effectively in multidisciplinary engineering teams. 

Course Specializations
The diploma course of study produces well rounded graduates. Beginning at year two and year 4 respectively they are able to choose modules based on specific areas of study or specializations such as

  1. Communication  
  2. Power 
  3. Instrumentation  
Program Objectives 

These statements describe the expected accomplishments of graduates during the first few years after graduation. For Electrical and Computer Engineering these objectives include (but are not limited to) an ability to:  

  1. Apply knowledge of science, mathematics and economics to solve electrical and computer engineering problems that confront society. 
  2. Design and conduct experiments and analyze and interpret data collected so as to validate Electrical and Computer Engineering theories and in doing so optimize processes. 
  3. Function on multidisciplinary teams. 
  4. Communicate effectively at all levels using graphical, written and oral methods media. 
  5. Have an understanding of the professional and ethical responsibilities of an Engineer. 
  6. Critically assess the impact (environmental and otherwise) of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.  
  7. Use techniques, skills, computers and other contemporary engineering tools necessary for engineering practice. 
  8. Perform managerial functions (planning, organizing, coordinating, controlling, and supervising) during project execution, and to work efficiently with multidisciplinary teams. 
  9. Fulfill the academic requirements for engineering accreditation for membership in professional engineering organizations across Jamaica, the Caribbean region and also internationally.

Entry Requirements

  • 4 CSEC/GCE O-Level: English Language, Mathematics & Physics/ Electrical & Electronic Technology and one other subject (preferably technical) at prescribed level

Interview may be required.
