Course Details
Course Goals and ObjectivesÂ
The course is designed to:Â
- Facilitate the student teacher’s acquisition of skills and attitudes for the effective teaching of Science and/or Mathematics at the secondary level.Â
- Assist student teachers in developing an awareness and understanding of the importance of science education in national development.Â
- Help student teachers conduct education or scientific research, apply scientific knowledge, and use scientific skills for the solution of problems.Â
- Train student teachers to appreciate and use technology that will enhance the teaching and learning process.Â
- Prepare teachers of science subjects who will provide the appropriate quality leadership, administration and supervision of science courses of study in the secondary education system.Â
- Provide prospective teachers with skills in curriculum planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of Science courses.Â
- Provide opportunities for student teachers to grow in confidence as independent learners and develop the attitudes and behavioural standards essential for good citizenship.Â
Course Design
The BSc. in Science and Education degree consists of two sciences selected from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, joint with education, along with supporting modules and electives.Â
Students can choose to Major in any option and minor in another, credits range from approximately 139 – 144. Credits are completed over eight (8) semesters. This includes two supervised periods of Teaching Practice in Year 3 and Year 4.

Entry Requirements
- 5 CSEC/GCE O-Level passes: English Language, Mathematics, 2 Science subjects relevant to the area of speacialization and any other subject.
- To major or minor in Mathematics a grade 1 or 2 in Mathematics must be achieved
- An interview may be required.
