The course is designed to train students in the core disciplines of Quantity Surveying i.e. measurement of building and civil engineering works, bid documentation, construction cost planning and economics, estimating cost of construction contracts as well as the development of research skills, professional ethics and general knowledge related to the Built Environment and the Quantity Surveying profession. The programme is unique in its approach as it incorporates a Project Management module and Professional Internship thereby providing students the opportunity to complete an internship, which is intended to develop students’ work ethic and interpersonal skills, and to facilitate the acquisition of pragmatic competence in the discipline.

Course Details

The Quantity Surveyor is the cost and financial specialist of the construction industry. The nature of the work and duties are comprehensive and varied, depending on the work situation, but would comprise the following:

  •  Estimating the cost of assisting with determining the feasibility of projects
  • Preparing documentation for competitive tendering
  • Tendering and negotiating for contracts
  • Managing and exercising financial control over contracts to ensure cash-flow and the profitability of projects
  • Controlling and managing subcontractors, suppliers, and the like
  • Concluding contracts upon completion of projects

Industry and the professions are in the process of rapid mechanization and computers are therefore an essential tool of the Quantity Surveyor. The Quantity Surveyor will become a person who enjoys managing and controlling the cost of small to large projects and people to various professional levels and will be able to adapt to the diverse nature of the profession and clients’ business. In addition, Quantity Surveyors enjoy a variation employment situation, as well as a balance between working in office and on site and appreciate the differences in the practice in both environments.

Good human relations, as well as the ability to think logically and report on situations in an orderly manner, are important since the Quantity Surveyor needs to develop a close working relationship with the architect, engineer and other members of the professional team.

Entry Requirements

  • 5 CSEC/GCE O-Level passes including English Language, Mathematics, and three (3) other approved subjects. Preferred subjects include: Building Technology, Electrical Installations,
    Chemistry, Physics, Additional Mathematics, Information Technology, Principles of Accounts, Technical Drawing, Geography.
  • Interview may be required.
