Course Details
The Bachelor of Engineering in Industrial Engineering (BEng. IE) program is a comprehensive four-year curriculum designed to train students in optimizing and managing integrated systems comprising people, materials, equipment, and processes. By merging engineering principles with mathematics, physical sciences, and business management, the program ensures a balance between technical proficiency and an understanding of human factors.Â
The program offers two key specializations. The Manufacturing Specialization includes modules such as Advanced Manufacturing Processes, Robotics, and Design for Manufacturing, which prepare students to master cutting-edge production technologies and methodologies. The Engineering Management Specialization includes modules such as Maintenance Engineering & Management, Management Information Systems, and Operations Management 2, aiming to equip students with the skills necessary for leadership roles in technology and operations management.Â
Programme Objectives:Â
- Think creatively in applying mathematics, basic sciences, and engineering principles to the design, analysis, and synthesis of engineering systems.Â
- Be proficient in the use of contemporary industrial engineering tools for designing and analyzing engineering systems, products, and processes.Â
- Demonstrate the ability to clearly exercise various forms of engineering communication (written, oral, graphical, and electronic).Â
- Determine the most effective ways to utilize resources, including people, machines, materials, financial assets, information, and energy, to optimize the productivity and quality of industrial processes.Â
- Prepare for leadership roles in a global environment.Â
- Fulfill the requirements for membership and/or registration in professional engineering organizations in Jamaica (PERB), the Caribbean region, and internationally.Â
- Demonstrate an understanding of the professional, social, environmental, and ethical responsibilities of the industrial engineer in society.Â
Graduates of the BEng. IE program are well-prepared for various career opportunities. Core roles include positions such as Process Engineer, Systems Analyst, Operations Manager, and Quality Assurance Engineer. Specialized roles like Supply Chain Manager, Logistics Coordinator, Project Manager, and Data Analyst allow graduates to focus on specific areas of industrial engineering. The program also equips students to excel in emerging fields, including Industry 4.0, Smart Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence in Operations, and Sustainability and Green Operations.Â
This program equips graduates with a holistic understanding and skill set to thrive in both traditional and future industrial environments, fostering a blend of technical, managerial, and ethical excellence.Â
Mode of Delivery: Primarily face-to-face, with select modules delivered online.Â
The delivery of all programs is grounded in a blend of laboratory sessions, classroom instruction, project-based learning, and industry exposure. The methodology emphasizes a student-centred, outcomes-based approach. At the beginning of each module, students are provided with clear learning objectives and are encouraged to engage in additional reading and research to complement the instructional components.Â
