Course Details
Effective 2025/26, incoming students to the B.A. in Communication Arts and Technology programme can choose to concentrate on any one of the following options: journalism, film, or integrated marketing communications. These replace the previous concentrations of journalism, advertising or public relations.
- Journalism students will be taught the foundations of journalism, upon which they will be trained to work in print, broadcast, online, and multiple platforms. Students will also be introduced to sports and entertainment journalism. All journalism students should be active members of the UTech Journalism Society.
- Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) amalgamates the pre-existing advertising and public relations specializations. IMC modules include traditional advertising and marketing skills, in addition to planning and execution of campaigns and social media communication and marketing.
- Film students will be taught the full range of introductory film skills and competencies. These include the use of equipment and software for film production and editing, cinematography, and film directing and production.
The BACAT programme is composed of 1) General Education modules, 2) Course of Study core modules, 3) Course of Study concentration modules, and 4) University Electives. The course structure is as follows:
- Level one: Preparation for university learning in general and specifically within the BACAT.
- Level two: Developmental, laying the foundation for several general language and communication and adjunct technical skills that the students will need to mature into competent media and communication practitioners.
- Level three: Building competence in their areas of emphasis as well as in the common technical core.
- Level four: Expertise building in technical areas and students’ emphases, as well as professional development take the spotlight.
Graduates of the BACAT programme are expected to:
- exhibit ethical behaviour in the use and production of creative material.
- exhibit technical proficiency in the use of media and communication technologies to produce messages that meet industry standards.
- demonstrate confidence, initiative and adaptability in acquiring new knowledge and skills in media/communication.
- possess the professional attitudes and social, cultural and financial literacy skills for successful insertion into the media/communication industry or to pursue graduate studies.
- master the autonomous use of the four language skills for producing media messages.
- possess the critical thinking and investigative skills to produce high quality media/communication content and prepare for graduate work.
Mode of Delivery
The modules of the BA in Communication Arts and Technology programme are taught by online, face-to-face/hands-on and hybrid modalities. Due to the practical nature of the degree, the studio modules are taught face-to-face. The communication and concentration modules are taught through a mix of online, face-to-face and hybrid modalities.
