UTechOpen is the continuing education school at the University of Technology, Jamaica. We offer Associate Degrees, Pre-University, Professional Programmes, and Short Courses, which are delivered via different modalities.

Providing access to traditional as well as non-traditional students to university education is one of the more flexible approaches to people development in any community. Meeting people where they are and providing them with the educational ladder to grow personally and professionally and in doing so, help the communities and industries in which they live and work to develop socially and economically is an important mandate of a national university. UTechOpen is pleased to be associated with this thrust of the University of Technology, Jamaica.

We believe in creating opportunities for people to access higher education and further learning whether this is for academic, professional, personal or recreational reasons. We aim to build bridges to facilitate education and training for Jamaican, Caribbean and international students and clients, as well as to add value to new and existing educational programmes in respect of quality assurance, research and professional validation.

The small team of professionals currently engaged in helping to establish and maintain the agenda of UTechOpen include fulltime and experienced part-time instructors and resource persons drawn from the communities we serve. We are committed to respond to requests and the needs of the community in ways that are convenient for them in terms of length of programmes, delivery methodology, and delivery site and assessment protocols.

Overview

To provide innovative and expanded access to learning to local, regional and global students.
Respond to the training and developmental needs of businesses and organizations.
Respond to the needs of people within select communities who might not have had access to university programmes.
Prepare eligible individuals to matriculate into the UTech, Ja. Faculties through the provision of pre-university courses.
Facilitate credit banking within the University.
Offer a package of courses at the CXC /Cape Levels to facilitate entry into UTech, Ja.

Courses of Study

UTech, Jamaica is institutionally accredited. As such ALL programmes in UTechOpen: School of Lifelong Learning and Professional Development are accredited.

Programmes

UTech Academy provides varying access points into UTech, Jamaica undergraduate programmes. UTech Academy is the pre-university and continuing education arm of UTechOpen that provides opportunities for future students to be prepared more deliberately to meet the matriculation needs for specific disciplines at UTech, Ja. Learners with limited access to higher education because of inadequate secondary preparation as well as other challenges to access centres of continuous learning, can now find opportunities through UTech Academy to grow academically and socially. UTech Academy offers Foundation Modules for learners without traditional CXC/CSEC passes. Some of these Foundation Modules include Accounts, Biology, Chemistry, Developmental English, Foundation of Academic, Literacies, Mathematics, Principles of Economics and Physics. Additionally, UTech Academy provides other pathways to the university’s undergraduate programmes via associate degrees; and the Sixth Form Pathways Programme which is scheduled to commence in 2025.

The dynamism of the world and changing work environments create new demands across all sectors - making it critical for senior executives to keep reskilling and upskilling for increased productivity and organisational success. UTechOpen offers high-impact, bespoke professional development programmes designed for executive professionals seeking to elevate their leadership capabilities to lead with success in an ever-evolving global landscape. The specialised Executive Education programmes cover areas such as Leadership and Management, Business Strategy, Marketing and Sales, Business Analytics, Strategic Management etc. The courses are delivered using flexible modalities by industry experts, some of whom are Faculty members. The courses are outcome-based, combining theory with hands-on applications, ensuring immediate relevance to today’s business challenges.

UTechOpen offers a wide range of Professional Studies Short Courses which are designed to improve your personal and professional skills. The courses provide knowledge and skills in areas such as Business, Law, Science, Education, Entrepreneurship, innovation etc. Employers and learners find these courses valuable, as the modules are designed for learners to acquire skills that can be applied for sustainable solutions to organisational challenges. The courses are delivered by highly qualified faculty members and industry experts, using a flexible blended modality. Learners may acquire badges and micro-credential certifications

The future of work is demanding digital literacy for increased productivity, greater efficiency and effectiveness. Competence in the areas of technology is critical in building a resilient workforce to meet the challenges of the future. UTechOpen offers a range of Tech Skills training in areas related to computing and information technology. These short courses are designed to provide learners with hands-on learning experiences, and problem-solving skills to succeed in tech roles within their organisations. This arm will function as a hub for specialised training areas such as Cyber Security, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), Robotics, Computer programming, Machine Learning, Drone Technology, and Introduction to Graphic Design etc.
