Faculty of The Built Environment

The Faculty of the Built Environment at the University of Technology, Jamaica is a unique academic unit in the Anglophone Caribbean. It brings together architecture, land surveying, geographic information sciences, urban and regional planning, Real Estate Management and Valuation surveying, quantity surveying, structural engineering, construction engineering, construction management, and Mines & Quarry Management. This is the place to be for those who desire to build a professional career in any of these fields. FoBE graduates are highly regarded, highly placed, and sought after throughout the Caribbean and beyond.

Dean's Message

The members of the Faculty of the Built Environment (FoBE), which comprise the School of Building and Land Management and the Caribbean School of Architecture, welcome new and returning students. We are happy that you chose our faculty as the place to mold you into the professionals you aspire to be, and we are certain that the year will be a fulfilling and rewarding one. Here at the FoBE, we take our role as facilitators of attaining your goals very seriously and work tirelessly toward ensuring that upon graduation you will have mastered the UTech, Ja., graduate attributes to make you work-ready.

 

As part of our overall mandate, the faculty remains committed to our mission to deliver optimal service utilizing a cadre of staff with the requisite skills, passion, and experience to guide the teaching and learning process. We are also committed to provide you access to built environment professional and experts who remain part of our team and who stand ready to extend industry guidance. At the Faculty of the Built Environment, you are also guaranteed to understand more about your community and the role your education will allow you to make toward its betterment. We are serious about our students understanding the ways in which the built environment as a profession can contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals, and how our graduates can become change agents for climate action.

 

The Faculty of the Built Environment is more than just a place to learn. It is a place to grow, and a place to make your voices heard. It is a place to find out who you are. As you work on becoming the built environment professionals you aspire to be, I implore all students to utilize the opportunities that the faculty (as well as the wider university) presents for fulfilling your limitless potential, through its academic, administrative and ancillary staff and through the colleagues you will encounter and friends you will make during your tenure. Harnessing Innovative Technologies to Support Resilient Settlements on the Coastal Zones of the Caribbean (HIT RESET Caribbean)

Mindset: Monitoring Data for Informal Settlement

The University of Technology, Jamaica through its Faculty of The Built Environment in collaboration with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency and Anton de Kom University of Suriname have received third-party grant funding through the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) as part of the ACP Innovation Fund sponsored by the 11th European Union Development Fund, to implement the project titled “Harnessing Innovative Technologies to Support Resilient Settlements on the Coastal Zones of the Caribbean (HIT RESET Caribbean)”.

The aim of this collaboration is for HIT RESET Caribbean to finance innovations in support of resilient coastal settlements in the Caribbean. To this end, UTech, Jamaica has partnered with Acacia Consulting & Research (Canada) and Nouvel Strategies (Saint Lucia) to look at the use of data and tools to map and monitor coastal informal settlements, for Jamaica and St. Lucia. We are also seeking to partner with the Urban Development Corporation which is greatly concerned about informal settlements on UDC land to increase the local perspective of the HIT RESET project. The expected funding is Euro 336,023.89 payable to UTech, Jamaica over the duration of the project to cover staff and equipment costs associated with the project activities.

The Faculty project team comprises the following team members:
Prof. Carol Archer

Project Lead/Urban Planner

The Project Lead will oversee the technical management of the Project and liaise with the key stakeholder as necessary to ensure challenges to implementation are overcome and will be the main point of verbal communication on the project.

Land Surveyor/GIS Specialist

The Land Surveyor/GIS Specialist will collect datasets from settlements, model testing and testing of methodology, work with the statistics department to create custom census profiles, assist Project Lead with validation of methodology, validation of the site selection of the communities, assist with the validation of the methodology and create a common platform with Jamaica and St. Lucia

Land Surveyor

The Land Surveyor will assist the (commissioned) Land Surveyor/GIS Specialist in all activities.

Project Manager

The Project Manager will support day to day communications with the HIT-RESET Caribbean team, review and submit Project deliverables, and manage contracts and budgets, Project finances, assist with the scheduling of meetings and preparation of reports.

Oversight of the project activities will be undertaken by assigned members of the SGSRE in accordance with the University’s procedural mandate for projects.
