Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law, launched on September 18, 2008 offers the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. Students have the opportunity of completing the degree programme in three years (fulltime) or in four years (part-time). Taught by a cadre of local and international experts with interdisciplinary training and experience, the programme is delivered through lectures, tutorials, casebook methods, research, seminars and moots.

An example of the Faculty’s innovative approach is the teaching of modules – such as Entertainment Law, Sports Law, and Intellectual Property – that support emerging dynamic growth sectors of the economy. In addition, the course of study provides learners with the opportunity to explore and develop an interest in the laws and legal systems of Jamaica and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

For those wanting to practice law, this programme provides a flexible route by which to complete the academic stage of the training needed for the progression to the vocational stage of legal education or related fields.

Dean's Message

A warm welcome to you our new and returning students. We are happy to have you as a part of the Faculty of Law family!

To our current students, we trust that you enjoyed a well-deserved break. To our new students you have made a wise choice in choosing the Faulty of Law here at the University of Technology, Jamaica.

Since its inception, the Faculty has immensely contributed to the Jamaican legal system. Our impressive network of alumni has contributed to the public and private bar in addition to various fields in their career choices.

Our students are resilient, dedicated, and hardworking and their enthusiasm for the law is commendable. The Faculty has an environment for learning which broadens their critical thinking and creative acumen which prepares them for the future in this ever-changing world.

As we journey together this academic year, always remember you are not alone. Our highly trained academic and administrative staff will guide and assist you to ensure that you excel in your academic pursuits. The knowledge and skills that you will attain will prepare you for the future.

While academia is important, we also want our students to be well-rounded and by so doing have a rich and rewarding social and academic life while at University. I encourage you to take advantage of the resources available to you both in the Faculty of Law and the wider University. Join any of the clubs/societies that are available on campus, whether that is becoming a member of the Students Union, the Debating Club/Mooting Competitions, the University Choir or any of the other clubs.

It is my honour to serve as the Dean (Ag.) of this Faculty and to work with an outstanding team of academic and administrative colleagues, students, alumni and well-wishers. The team looks forward to working with you to achieve your academic goals, and in turn ask that you work hard, commit to the program, conduct yourself ethically while developing professional skills and attitudes.

All the very best for a productive school year!
