Faculty of Engineering & Computing

The period 1998 – 2007 was characterized as one of dynamic growth and development for the Faculty of Engineering and Computing. Within the ambit of the new Academic Development and Strategic Plan in 1998, UTech was reorganized into five Faculties and emerging from the rationalization of the university’s academic and administrative units, the Faculty of Engineering and Computing (FENC) became an entity.

The vision of the Faculty of Engineering & Computing is to be the preferred partner in providing education and training for engineering and computing scholarship in Jamaica and the Caribbean.

Solving issues through Technology and Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering and Computing aims to do its part in moving UTech towards a culture which includes conducting applied research and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students’ projects in its two schools: the School of Engineering (SoE) and the School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT)
At FENC, the responses to national and international imperatives in the area of computing and engineering place emphasis in the practical research toward the creation of an artefact that will provide impactful benefits to society at various levels.
Research is applied to undergraduate and graduates course of studies alike, aiming to enrich students learning path lead by researchers in the various schools.

In March 1958 the Jamaica Institute of Technology was established and in the following year the name as changed to ‘The College of Arts, Science and Technology’ (CAST). STEM Scholarships

Criteria for STEM Scholarship
This is a need based scholarship. Scholarships will be offered to applicants who can demonstrate financial need (from low-income families, from disadvantaged population/communities) and have successfully completed national high school leaving examinations and are highly motivated to continue tertiary education in the fields of Computing and Engineering.
Candidate Profile – UTech, Jamaica

The following details the qualifying criteria for the UTech, Jamaica STEM Scholarship:

  • Be a citizen of Jamaica
  • Economically disadvantaged.  Applicant should be able to provide verifiable financial needs.  Candidates should be between 17 and 25 years of age.
  • Fulfil the University’s matriculation requirement for the course of study.
  • This is a full tuition award.  Applicants are allowed to accept another tuition award simultaneously provide record of extra-curricular activities/community involvement.
Gender Equity

Male prospects are encouraged to apply. With a history of males traditionally opting out of the education system, a concerted effort is being made to maintain a gender balance.

How to Apply for STEM Scholarship

You can apply for the STEM Scholarship by:

The steps to apply for scholarship are:

  • Complete the fillable application form on the University’s Website: Application forms
  • Attached a copy/photo of all required documents in the upload section provided
  • Submit your completed application (via email or walk-in) financialaidutech@gmail.com
  • Scholarship applicants will be required to sign a bond as they will be bonded to the Government of Jamaica according to the terms of the individual award. The length of the bond will be determined based on the total value of the award as outlined in the Bonding Policy of the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service. 
  • Students will not be allowed to maintain the award if they change their programme of study or change the institution at which they are pursuing their programme of study
  • Beneficiaries are required to maintain current contact information (address and telephone numbers) with the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service and the University of Technology, Jamaica. 
  • Graduates who benefitted from the scholarship are required to provide the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service with job letter on completion. If there is a change of job during the period the graduate is serving his/her bond, a new job letter should be provided  
  • UTech, Ja. Scholarship Office is required to submit a signed and stamped transcript at the end of each academic year for each awardee.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted (by telephone and/or email) at the end of the shortlisting period and invited to attend an interview.

Each interview panel should have a minimum of three panellists to include:

  • a representative from the Ministry of Finance Scholarships and Assistance Unit

A representative/nominee from the:

  • the institution Scholarship Office
  • faculty to which the student will be pursuing his/her chosen programme of study.
