School of Hospitality and Tourism Management

The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is one of four schools in the College of Business and Management. The School offers high quality full-time courses of study that prepares students for a successful career in the hospitality and tourism industry both locally and globally.

This industry is among the world’s fastest growing economies and represents one of the major sources of employment opportunities. Faculty members of the School are equipped with industry experience, teaching and research skills that will enable the mastery of their field of study. The School has a Franchise arrangement with the Brown’s Town Community College to offer the B.Sc. in Food Service Management. Students would complete years 1 and 2 at the Brown’s Town Community College, then transfer to the Papine Campus for years 3 and 4.

The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management has made notable strides since its inception. In July 2024, the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management earned prestigious accreditation from the American Culinary Association Education Foundation (ACFEF), making us the first institution in Jamaica to achieve this honour. For the next three years, our BSc in Food Service Management, with a specialization in Culinary Arts and Management, will be proudly listed on the ACFEF website. Graduates from this programme will not only receive their degrees but will also be recognized internationally as Certified Culinarians—a remarkable achievement that sets them apart in the global culinary industry!

The School has produced outstanding graduates that have contributed significantly to the industry’s landscape. Of utmost importance is the growth in the number of students, as well as the strategic development of the courses of study and specializations since 2003. The changes in the courses of study reflect the School’s adaptation to our stakeholders needs. Between the years 1997 – 2008, the School doubled the student intake and the population has continued to grow.

  • A Tracer Study conducted by the Career and Placement Unit with a total of 64 students who registered, revealed that 36% of students contacted are employed and 31% of those students are working in their field of study.

Lillian’s Training Restaurant

  • Lillian’s is the official Training Restaurant for the School. It was officially opened on November 4, 1992. At that time, the restaurant was operated primarily by the students of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (SHTM). The restaurant is in the Caribbean’s only sculpture park, this historic and beautifully renovated Georgian building consists of a fine dining restaurant which is opened to the public for lunch on weekdays, and also caters for special functions, on request. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust continues to preserve the Lillian’s structure as a historic building. At the time of its inception, the restaurant was renovated with the assistance of local hotels and related business operations.
  • Today, Lillian’s remains an integral component in the learning process of SHTM’s courses of study as it continues to provide a forum for practical culinary, food and beverage experiences.

  • Bachelor of Science in Hospitality & Tourism Management
  • Bachelor of Science in Food Service Management

How to Apply

  • Five (5) CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Level) with Grades 1, 2 or 3 as of June 1998 or GCE O- Level with Grades A, B, or C, including Mathematics and English Language. A foreign language, or Food and Nutrition would be an asset. An interview maybe required and three other approved subjects.
  • Mature applicants may satisfy Prior Learning Assessment requirements.
