Industry Partners

Who can participate?

  • UTech, Ja. students who have completed at least one year of their course of study and have been approved by their Heads of Schools.
  • Organisations located locally, regionally or internationally, that are able to accommodate students for placement periods of between 4 and 30 weeks.

How do you become involved in our co-op programmes?

  • By expressing an interest in working with the University to help train future industry employees.
  • By providing a professional work environment, including supportive management, and opportunities for diverse industry exposure.
  • By being a company representing a particular industry segment or with unique or multiple facilities.
  • By being responsive to UTech, Ja.’s invitations to formalize a “Partners in Careers” relationship with the Co-op Ed Unit.

How are industry partners recruited?

The Co-op Ed Unit seeks to identify Co-op Ed industry partners via networking events such as Faculty Career Symposia, Research and Technology Day, Career Fairs and Guest Lectures.

Industry partners may also communicate their interest in partnering with us by sending an email or simply by calling.

Becoming a Co-op Ed industry partner

Once the prospective industry partner communicates his desire to partner with UTech, Ja. the Co-operative Education Co-ordinator will arrange a visit (where possible) or telephone meeting with a view to discuss the operation/implementation of the Co-op Ed programme. As a follow up activity, a team of Co-op Ed co-ordinators will visit the organisation to complete a site inspection and to officially sign off on the partnership.

The application process is deemed complete once you agree to, sign and submit the Co-op Ed Application form, along with any available company information.

Requests for Placements

Step 1

Once you have registered with the Co-op Ed Unit, you may inform us, via ced@utech.edu.jm and copied to sjunor@utech.edu.jm of any available Co-op Ed placement opportunities.
Alternatively, you are sent a placement request form at the beginning of each semester. You are required to complete and submit this form to the Unit by the given date.

Step 2

This step involves the selection of students, which can either be done by the School’s Co-op Ed Co-ordinator concerned or by you, the Co-op Ed employer. If the latter option is chosen, copies of select students’ résumé are sent to you for processing. You will then be required to make arrangements to interview these students. Interviewing arrangements must be communicated with the Co-op Ed Unit or the School’s Co-op Ed Co-ordinator concerned.

Finally, you will inform the Unit or the School’s Co-op Ed Co-ordinator concerned, via e-mail, of the students who have been selected for placement.

Please note:

  • You are responsible for protecting the confidentiality of our students’ records.
  • Employers who interview are under no obligation to make job offers.
  • Once the placement request is initiated by you, the Co-op Ed employer, you will need to provide the following information:
