Launched on February 1, 2018, the University of Technology, Jamaica Press was established to promote research and publications primarily among members of the University Community, providing an avenue for lecturers, other members of staff and external authors to publish the results of their research, and to produce works that will bring together established as well as new knowledge in book form with market appeal.
About The Press
The University of Technology, Jamaica Press began operations on February 1, 2018, as a unit under the Office of the President. The University Press is established to promote research and publications primarily among members of the University Community, providing an avenue for lecturers and other members of staff to publish the results of their research, and to produce works that will bring together established as well as new knowledge. The Press is development-oriented, both in respect of the development of staff members, and in respect of its contribution to broad issues of development in Jamaica and the Caribbean.
The decision on whether to publish a particular manuscript will be determined by the quality of the manuscript as assessed by competent reviewers and not necessarily by the profitability of the final product in terms of sales.

Objectives and Mission of the Press
- To assist the UTech, Jamaica Community (lecturers and students) and also external researchers/ authors in their publishing needs.

- To encourage more research and publications in all fields of study, for economic and scientific advancement.
- To promote a culture of publishing.
Operations of the University Press
- Screen manuscripts and select high-quality submissions for publishing primarily from authors within the University.
- Commission manuscripts as may be deemed desirable from time to time.
- Arrange for the editing, designing and typesetting of manuscripts selected for publication.
- Arrange for printing and shipping
- Arrange distribution, marketing and sale of publications in both print and electronic forms

The University of Technology, Jamaica Press publishes scholarly works for both members of academic communities (staff and students) and educated general readers as: Textbooks, Monographs, Edited Collections, Reference Books, and General readership works with scholarly content. Manuscripts are particularly welcomed in the disciplines taught and researched at the University of Technology Jamaica.
- The Press will consider for publication theses which have been revised into book format. The date of examination and evidence of successful defence of the thesis must be provided.
- The Press will consider for publishing on merit textbooks for schools at the secondary and primary levels.
- The Book Proposal must be prepared as a Word document with 1.5 spacing and a conventional font.
ELEMENTS OF THE BOOK PROPOSAL
Author(s)’ Identification and Contact Information: For each author: Name. Institution. Postal address. Email address. Phone number(s). Social media addresses. Brief Bio which could be published with the book and used in marketing the book.
Title: A good title is very important in the marketing of the book. The main title should be short and clear and succinctly say what your book is about. Editors may later recommend a change of title. Sub-titles can be used to add more information. Include keywords in your working title.
Category of book and readership: Indicate what type of book you are proposing, the subject area, and for what readership market (and courses for textbooks).
Headline, Pitch & Keywords: Without repeating the title, summarise the book in a few paragraphs, describing the main purpose of the work, its main thesis or central point, its distinctive features, and how it will be useful to the intended readership. List keywords.
Chapter-by-chapter description of content: Present a list of the intended chapters with a brief outline of the content of each and an estimate of the word count.
Illustrations: Describe the types of illustrations to be used in the book (tables, graphs, charts, diagrams, drawings, photographs, maps, etc), how they will be sourced and whether they will be available in camera-ready form or will require typesetting.
Sample material: It is highly desirable to attach a sample chapter as a Word document.
CVs: Attach author(s) CVs emphasizing qualifications and experience for writing the book and previous publications and presentations.
SUBMISSION: Email the completed Book Proposal as a Word document to the email address of the University of Technology, Jamaica Press: utechjapress@utech.edu.jm.
REVIEW OF BOOK PROPOSAL
The University of Technology, Jamaica Press will carry out a review of the Book Proposal by members of the Editorial Advisory Board and by external persons assessing it for technical soundness, value, and marketability, and decide on publishing. The decision of the Press will then be communicated to the author(s). If a Book Proposal can be improved with reasonable effort by the author(s) for reconsideration by the Press this may be recommended.
The manuscript must be prepared and submitted with strict adherence to the following basic guidelines:
- The manuscript should be written in standard, grammatically correct English with either British or American spelling consistently used with no mixing of the two and avoiding latinizations as far as possible. The Press will not undertake extensive corrections of language and will return manuscripts needing such corrections. Author(s) should hire an editor before submission of the manuscript, if necessary.
- Use of the Jamaican language for special effects in small amounts is acceptable
- Style sheets are easily available on the Internet. The manuscript must use one style consistently.
- The Manuscript must include a Table of Contents
- If the book is formally referenced, the referencing style of the subject area must be consistently used and which style is used indicated in a note to the Editor
- A Preface should be provided for the book
- Formatting must be kept as simple as possible
- The manuscript must be word processed using a conventional font at the default size for that font
- If a chapter has more than one level of sub-headings these must be differentiated (by size, degree of indentation, underlining, etc)
- Â The manuscript should be spaced 1.5 or 2.0
-  The manuscript should be submitted as a single Word document without any illustrative material. All illustrative material: figures, tables, drawings, photographs, etc, must be saved and submitted as separate files, with placement indicated by annotation within both the manuscript and the files of illustrative material. [A bracketed] sequentially numbered ‘callout’ in the manuscript should be used to indicate placement for each item of illustrative material.
- Â Â All illustrations must be given a caption, and source fully indicated if not originally created
- Â The manuscript should be completely free of all Track Changes or other comments and annotations
- Â Â A word count must be provided for the main manuscript without the illustrations
- Â The completed manuscript must be delivered to the University of Technology, Jamaica Press both on a computer storage device such as a USB (thumb) drive and as two hardcopy printouts of the material exactly as it is on the storage device
An Index list of ALL keywords chapter by chapter, if agreed between Press and author(s), must be submitted along with the manuscript as a separate file. See Indexing.

Images must have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi for the size at which they will appear in the printed publication. TIFF image file format is preferred whenever possible.

Authors should use original material (text and images) as much as possible. Where the works of others must be used, authors must:
- Follow Fair Dealing (Fair Use) guidelines which are widely available on the Internet, or
- Secure permission for use from owners of copyright material. The University of Technology, Jamaica Press provides sample letters for seeking text permissions and image permissions
The University of Technology, Jamaica Press will pay up to a maximum of US$1,000 for the use of copyright material in one book. Payments are only made to copyright owners upon publication of the book.

Indexing, when it is agreed to include an Index, is shared between authors and the University of Technology, Jamaica Press.
Authors should comprehensively list ALLÂ keywords, significant names, places, and concepts in each chapter and submit a separate Index list with their manuscript.
The Press will expand and complete the Index for inclusion in the book.
Once submitted, the manuscript will be checked for meeting manuscript guidelines specifications. When cleared it will be reviewed and edited by internal and external editors.
The edited manuscript will then be sent back to the author(s) for final review to verify content and to make any revisions or updates.
When the author(s) return the manuscript final editorial changes will be made then the book is taken through typesetting and design. The Press will discuss cover design with the author.
When a Book Proposal has been accepted, the author(s) will be offered a Publishing Agreement setting out the agreement to deliver a completed manuscript to the stated specifications and under the terms and conditions of the University of Technology, Jamaica Press.
The Publishing Contract clearly sets out author responsibilities and Press obligations.
