One of Jamaica’s most distinguished scientific minds on the international stage, Professor Camillo Taylor will return home to deliver the Keynote Address at the University of Technology, Jamaica’s (UTech, Jamaica) Research, Technology and Innovation Day, scheduled for Thursday, March 12, 2026, at the Shared Facilities Building, Papine Campus.

Research, Technology and Innovation Day is one of UTech, Jamaica’s flagship annual events, showcasing the institution’s commitment to advancing knowledge creation, applied research, and technology-driven solutions that support national and global development. The event brings together researchers, educators, students, industry leaders, policymakers, and members of the wider community to celebrate innovation and research excellence.  Staged under the theme “Impactful STEM Research for Powering Development,” this year’s showcase will highlight the transformative role of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in driving sustainable national growth and global competitiveness.

Professor Taylor is a world-leading authority in the fields of Computer Vision and Robotics, with groundbreaking contributions to 3D reconstruction, vision-guided robot navigation, and intelligent embedded camera systems. His work has helped shape commercially deployed techniques for recovering architectural models from images and has advanced the understanding of scene interpretation and human posture recovery from photographs and video footage.

A graduate of Harvard College, where he earned his A.B. degree in Electrical Computer and Systems Engineering in 1988, Professor Taylor went on to complete his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at Yale University in 1990 and 1994, respectively. He later served as a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, before joining the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 1997, where he remains a leading member of the Computer and Information Science Department.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Prof. Taylor has received numerous accolades, including the NSF CAREER Award, the Lindback Minority Junior Faculty Award, and a Best Paper Award at the IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision. In recognition of his excellence in teaching, he received the prestigious Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2012.

A Prolific scholar, Professor Taylor has published close to 500 research papers, with an extraordinary 18,866 citations, underscoring his global impact in the scientific community. He has served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence and held major leadership roles in top-tier international conferences, including serving as General Chair of ICCV 2021 and Program Chair of IEEE CVPR in multiple years.

A former Jamaica Scholar (1984) and graduate of Campion College, Professor Taylor’s return marks a proud moment for the University and the nation, underscoring Jamaica’s contribution to global advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics.

Dr. Kevin Brown, President, University of Technology, Jamaica, described Professor Tayor’s participation as a moment of profound national pride and affirmation of Jamaican excellence.

“As Jamaica’s national STEM university, UTech, Jamaica is purpose-driven in advancing research and innovation that fuel economic growth and strengthen our global competitiveness,” Dr. Brown said.  “Professor Camillo Taylor’s extraordinary achievements in robotics and artificial intelligence exemplify the brilliance of Jamaican talent on the world stage.  His journey from Jamaica Scholar to internationally recognised leader will inspire our students and stand as a powerful affirmation to what Jamaica can achieve through sustained investment in STEM excellence.

The University community and the public are invited to attend what promises to be an inspiring keynote address, highlighting cutting-edge advances in robotics, artificial intelligence, and computer vision, and their relevance to Jamaica’s innovation and development agenda.

END.
