Five final year students from the School of Engineering, University of Technology, Jamaica received a combined $1 million scholarship from UC Rusal Alumina Jamaica Limited (Windalco), with each awardee receiving $200,000. The presentation was made during a special handover ceremony held on February 23, 2026, in the Scholarships Conference Room at UTech, Jamaica’s Papine campus.
Dr. Garcia Green McLennon, Chief Technical Officer, expressed gratitude on behalf of the University as she underscored the institution’s national role in science and technology education. “UTech is Jamaica’s national STEM university, and engineering is the ‘E’ in that big STEM profile,” she said. “Thank you so much for investing in our bright prospects.”
Mr. Glendon Johnson, Human Resource Director, UC Rusal Alumina Jamaica Limited (Windalco), reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting engineering education and national development. “We continue because we understand the value that engineering contributes to any economy, any country,” Johnson said. “This is an investment.”
He emphasized that the initiative forms part of the company’s broader corporate responsibility to make “an investment in the education system and the overall development of young people and the country as a whole,” he stated.
Mr. Johnson added that UC Rusal is considering expanding the scholarship to other fields of study as he extended congratulations to the awardees.
In delivering the vote of thanks, scholarship recipient Jada Simpson expressed appreciation to the programme’s sponsor while underscoring the significance of the investment in students’ futures. “Your continued support of engineering students is a vote of confidence in our potential and in the role we will play in shaping Jamaica’s industrial development,” she shared.
She also highlighted the tangible impact of the funding on students’ academic journeys. “Opportunities like this ease significant burdens and allows us to focus fully on becoming the engineers and professionals our country needs.” she added. “We do not take that lightly.
