Course Details

The BSc Dental Hygiene (BSc DH) course of study aims to produce professional dental hygienists who are prepared to take on the role of primary oral health care providers within the evolving local, regional, and international healthcare systems. 

The course of study equips dental hygienists with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to assist individuals and groups in achieving and maintaining both oral and general health. 

Grounded in foundational knowledge of biomedical, social, and behavioral sciences, and dental hygiene theory and practice, the course of study helps learners develop independent learners and critical thinkers. Students are trained to address public oral health needs thoughtfully and respectfully, with decisions informed by principles of social justice. 

The course of study is designed to meet the oral health needs of Jamaican residents by offering learners relevant, community-based, and innovative experiences, allowing them to develop their full scope of practice as dental hygienists. 

In collaboration with licensing and accrediting bodies, employers, community groups, other health professionals, and the government, the course of study integrates international standards for dental hygiene education. It aims to provide flexible and responsive education that supports the educational and labor mobility of graduates and fosters research capacity in the dental hygiene profession. 

The course of study consists of six academic terms delivered in a continuous sequence, enabling completion within two full academic years.

Entry Requirements

  • 5 CSEC/GCE O-Level passes including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry/Integrated Science and Biology/Human & Social Biology and one other subject.
  • Interview is required.
