The Certificate in Midwifery is a specialist post-basic program intended to prepare students for a specialized career as registered Midwives. The program provides the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to deliver high-quality patient care to the expectant family within the field of midwifery. This program is open to registered nurses only.

Course Details

Program Structure 

This is a one (1) year program of study. It comprises 13 modules, spanning 2 semesters and 1 summer session.  

The program is divided into two main areas: 

  • Instructive Teaching Sessions: These include classroom and laboratory sessions covering theoretical content and clinical skills introduction and practice.  
  • Experiential Learning: Students engage in clinical settings across hospitals and health centers island-wide allowing them to form theoretical and practical linkages which assist in the development of critical thinking and clinical skills. 
Course Structure 

The curriculum has one (1) primary component: 

  • Midwifery Specific Courses: These modules focus on the specialized knowledge and skills required for essential midwifery practice.
Licensing Preparation

The Certificate in Midwifery program is designed to prepare students for the Nursing Council of Jamaica licensing examination. Passing this exam is crucial for obtaining licensure to practice as a Registered Midwife (RM).

Entry Requirements

  • Registered Nurses who have completed an accredited nursing programme and are actively working in a health facility. Upon completing the programme, students must apply for the Nursing Council of Jamaica Midwifery examination to be licensed and qualified to practice as a midwife.
