Entrepreneurship

The Entrepreneurship arm of the School of Graduate Studies, Research & Entrepreneurship [SGSRE] was established to provide administrative support for the University’s thrust for expanded income generation through entrepreneurial activities. The entrepreneurship leadership of the SGSRE focuses primarily on consultancy services delivered by staff, commissioned research, and grants from funding agencies. The School manages a growing and diversifying portfolio of income-generating projects.

Institutional Consultancy Unit

An Institutional Consultancy Unit (ICU) within the School of Graduate Studies, Research and Entrepreneurship (SGSRE) has been established to streamline the entrepreneurial thrust of the institution and to operationalize the University’s Consultancy Policy. Specifically, the ICU exists to leverage the varied expertise of staff, complemented with that of external partners, as necessary, to provide customized consultancy services to clients in both the private and public sectors, nationally and regionally.

Consultancy Policy

The UTech, Ja. Consultancy Policy seeks to address the ongoing consultancy activities by academic units, departments and other units of UTech, Jamaica and among staff members and other relevant professionals to include improve areas of deficiency and to enhance the overall consultancy product of the university.

Consulting

Consulting” refers to the provision of professional services on a short-term basis, where a fee-for-service or equivalent relationship with a third party exists. There are many types of consulting relationships and fee arrangements, some of which are not considered “consulting.” These include: Publications – Scholarly communication in the form of books, movies, television/cable/radio productions, art works and similar forms of publications., that generate income for faculty, staff and/ or for another party (e.g., a publisher).
Professional Services – This includes advisory or other service on national commissions, governmental agencies and boards, committees of other universities, and other professional bodies for which professional fees are paid.

Consulting Support Services

These includes services such as databases, data searches, high speed computers, data analysis, document production, writing/editing project proposals and reports, record keeping, handling correspondence, managing accounts, scheduling activities and managing work plan time lines, organizing and managing meetings and travel, office space and related services. Consultancy Project budget should account for and reflect the cost of support services that will be required.

Private Consulting

Private Consulting means consulting undertaken for remuneration or other consideration by a member of staff or other relevant professional in his or her personal capacity as an individual or through a partnership, private company, or any similar entity, on his/her private time, as opposed to in his or her capacity as an employee of UTech, Jamaica. Private consulting and related professional work done by staff members or other relevant professionals on their time and without use of University resources do not fall within the ambit of this policy.

Involvement of Students in Consulting

If undergraduate or graduate students assist in consulting activities it is expected that they will be fairly compensated for their time, on agreed terms. Any participation by students in consulting activities is strictly voluntary and should not interfere with or disrupt their academic studies.
