29 October - December 2018 | VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica T he College of Business and Management on November 15, 2018 launched its report on Teens & Technology, “Young Jamaicans in a Hyper-Connected World: Life Online at the Papine Campus. The research is led by Dean of the College, Professor Paul Golding. In attendance as special guests were teachers and students from high schools that participated in the survey. Also in attendance was Mr. Fitz Jackson, Opposition Spokesperson on National Security, representatives from sponsoring companies, Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica and Office of Utilities Regulation. Professor Paul Golding, Dean, College of Business and Management, provided a report on the findings of a survey that was administered in 2018 to 2,690 Jamaican students in grades 7- 13, ages 13- 18 years. The purpose of the survey was to explore the benefits and challenges teenage students experience when they use Information and Communications Technology (ICT) such as cell phones, tablets and computers. In addition to the survey instruments, three focus group sessions were conducted with students/teens. This was to further interrogate the results from the quantitative analysis to gain additional insights. Professor Golding presented information which revealed the social codes young people developed with respect to their online interactions and their attitudes about online issues such as privacy, cyberbullying, sexting, pornography, fake news and hateful content. He also spoke about the ways young people used online media to support their learning and to create new content. Emphasis was placed on the need to improve digital literacy among teens, teachers and parents and recommendations were put forward to accomplish this. M r.
