ighty-five (85) international students enrolled for the 2024/ 25 academic year were specially welcomed at the International Students’ Reception hosted by the Department of Student Services on September 26, 2024 at the Papine Campus. UTech, Jamaica President Dr. Kevin Brown encouraged the International students to view the importance of their education for national growth, stating, “You are not just here on an individual pursuit; you’re building your nation through every discipline studied here at UTech.” Dr. Brown highlighted UTech’s hands-on approach, blending theory with practice, particularly in STEM fields, which have been a focus at UTech for six decades. He encouraged students to engage fully in their experience, advising, “Don’t isolate yourselves; get involved. Real student experience happens outside the classroom, where you can build your skillset and grow personally.” He assured students that the university’s leadership is committed to improving infrastructure to enhance their experience. Mrs. Dorrset Gabbidon-Pottinger, Assistant Registrar, conveyed greetings on behalf of Vice President and University Registrar, Miss Marion Brown, who noted the significance of the reception in helping students connect with key university staff. “The event provides international students with an introduction to the Student Services Division and the targeted support it offers,” she shared. Mrs. Gabbidon-Pottinger assured students of assistance in adjusting to university life, highlighting that the Student Services Office is there to support them beyond academics. Mrs. Janice Sinclair-Morgan, International Students Coordinator echoed these sentiments, encouraging students when faced with challenges, to seek help with the International Students’ Office, Student Welfare Office, academic advisors, and the UTech Students’ Union, which are available resources.
