UTech, Ja. Voices July- September 2024

Samantha White I am in the Joint Colleges of Oral and Veterinary Sciences pursuing a degree in Occupational Health and Safety with the hope of transferring to Public Health. I am from Westmoreland and I wanted the experience of studying outside of the region where I live. I am the first in my immediate family to go to college. My aunt who is an English teacher in Japan attended UTech. Her story is a successful one and so I am following her footsteps. Coyotito Rose I am doing Actuarial Science in the Faculty of Science and Sport. At first I wanted to do Accounting, but then I realized that it doesn’t really bring money and I got the interest in Mathematics from my teacher who said, “you’re a good student in Mathematics, you’re going to do Add Mathematics so I decided to do it and learnt the syllabus in eight months...I also did Applied Mathematics and Integrated Mathematics and I got one (1) and was placed first in Jamaica in Applied Mathematics. UTech is more practical, they provide better learning facilities. You experience more here and you are allowed to be free in yourself. I decided to go with UTech because my subject is a practical course and UTech is a practical school. There are opportunities to become well-rounded through clubs and societies and the many events here. I am studying Quantity Surveying in The Faculty of the Built Environment. I intend to learn balance here at UTech and that is with my academic studies and sports. I want to successfully transition into the working world with good leadership capabilities. I didn’t weigh my options because UTech is the best place to study, I am confident that UTech can help me achieve my goals. Rashaad Bailey Jelani Brown I am studying Sports Management in the Faculty of Science and Sport. I chose UTech, because I am a track athlete and I believe Coach Stephen Francis and his brother can get me to a good level as a professional athlete. I looked at the course outlines for the different modules that I will be studying and noticed that the topics that I will be covering will help me to manage and prevent injuries. My parents and previous coach and teammates recommended UTech to me and I hope that they will have me as part of UTech’s Track Team. 11 July - September 2024 | VOICES Quarterly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica STUDENT VOICES
