19 September – December 2021 | VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica Co-authors Dr. Eugenie Brown-Myrie, Associate Professor and Mrs. Yvonne Johnson-Reid, Lecturer, School of Pharmacy, College of Health Sciences (COHS) hosted a special launch ceremony for their University of Technology, Jamaica Press publication titled From Apprenticeship to Graduate Pharmacy Programmes: Evolution of Pharmacy Education in Jamaica on December 1, 2021 via Zoom. The book “chronicles the development and evolution of pharmacy education in Jamaica from apprenticeship to graduate programmes in pharmacy at the University of Technology, Jamaica. It preserves for posterity and for current students and practitioners important information about the profession, as well as about the sterling contributions of individuals and organizations.” Professor Colin Gyles, Acting President, heartily congratulated co-authors Dr. Brown-Myrie and Mrs. Johnson-Reid on the publication of the book, and on the invaluable contribution they have made to the University and to the profession of pharmacy and pharmacy education. Professor Gyles further noted that the publication from the UTech, Jamaica Press, which was launched in February 2018, underscores the University’s commitment to enhancing and promoting research on matters related to national and international development. Dr. Paul Ivey, Associate Vice President, School of Graduate Studies, Research and Entrepreneurship (SGSRE) and Manager of the UTech, Jamaica Press, in also expressing pride on the fruition of the book, said that it is the eighth published by the Press since its establishment. He highlighted that the recent publication, as well as other books by the Press are available for download from the Book Fusion platform in eBook format and also through Amazon in paperback for shipping globally. Endorsements and greetings were received from Dr. Adella Campbell, Dean, College of Health Sciences (COHS), Dr. Janet Campbell-Shelly, Associate Professor, COHS, Dr. Norman Dunn, MP, Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, and alumnus of University of Technology, Jamaica’s Pharmacy programme; Dr. Andrea Daly, Head, School of Pharmacy; Dr. Lisa Bromfield, Chair, Education Committee, Pharmacy of Council of Jamaica; Dr. Winsome B. Christie, President, Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica and Ms. Kalawattie Datt-Singh, President, Caribbean Association of Pharmacists. Both authors expressed that they were humbled and heartened by the many endorsements and congratulations offered by the attendees at the launch ceremony. The authors also recognized, and made virtual presentations of signed copies of the work, to key contributors, including Dr. Henry Lowe, who provided the foreword and endorsed the publication, Dr. Sangster, who granted permission for use of photographs and offered support, and Dr. Ellen CampbellGrizzle, whose journal Caribbean Pharmacy News, provided a valuable source of information for the publication, among others who served as proof readers and editors.
