Partnership with the Jamaica Cancer Society The Faculty through the larger partnership between UTech, Ja and the Jamaica Cancer Society hosted the physical activity warm up session for Relay For Life 2019. The event was held on Saturday, June 2019 at the front field of the Papine Campus. The Jamaica Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event which focuses on celebrating cancer survivorship and to honour those individuals who fought but unfortunately lost the battle to the dreaded disease. The proceeds raised from the event are used by the Jamaica Cancer Society to fund its screening clinics, public education efforts and tobacco cessation programmes. Collaboration with UTech Alumni Association (New York Chapter) and University of Pennsylvania The New York Chapter continues to partner with the Department of Sport to offer all the hydration and protein needs of the Penn Relay Team. Each year, members of the organization transports protein bars, water and other rehydration fluids to facilitate the team’s recovery. Additionally, UPenn provides an accommodation grant that offsets the team’s cost. Memorandum of Understanding Between Belize City Council and UTech, Jamaica The University through the Faculty signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Belize City Council on February 2020. This collaboration will see CSOSS staff training and certifying coaches in Belize City in the areas of basketball, volleyball and track & field. Mr Orville Byfield, Director of Sport at UTech, Jamaica provided oversight for the collaboration and will offer technical & consultancy services while coordination and instruction will be spearheaded by the Caribbean School of Sport Sciences. FISU Affiliation The Department of Sport, through its membership of Intercol, is also affiliated with the Federation for International University Sport (FISU), who organise various University sports competitions for studentathletes across the world. Through this organisation, student-athletes are able to take part in international competitions such as the World University Games. An added benefit is that our team managers get access to various workshops and mentorship opportunities around sport. Student Achievements Three members of UTech, Jamaica’s netball team - Shanice Beckford, Jodi-Ann Ward and Khadijah Williams were selected to the Sunshine Girls Squad for the 2019 Netball World Cup in July 2019. They were Mrs. Ave Maria McIntosh, Head, School of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science and Sport presents the UTech, Jamaica 3rd Annual Mathematics Quiz Competition winner’s trophy to Knox College’s (l-r) Raheem Wilson, Ruth-Ann Blair and Niguel Walker, following the finals of the Competition on Thursday, November 28, 2019 at the University’s Papine Campus.
