University of Technology, Jamaica 60 JOINT COLLEGES OF MEDICINE, ORAL HEALTH AND VETERINARY SCIENCES Cont’d. Local and International Linkages Under the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Technology and the Ministry of Health, four Dental Therapy students completed four months of externship in Government dental facilities in Kingston and St. Andrew. The MOU between UTech, Jamaica and the Ministry of Health, facilitated rotation of Dental Assisting students through the Government of Jamaica Dental facilities for Dental Assisting Practice. The School of Public Health and Health Technology collaborated with health authorities/departments and companies for the completion of Supervised Clinical Practicum for students in the Public Health Nursing, Occupational Health and Health Technology, Meats and Other Foods and the Environmental Health Courses of Study. Some of the collaborations are as follow: - Regional Health Authorities for the completion of Practicum for PHN Students. - Jamaica Broilers Best Dressed Chicken Processing Plant provides poultry inspections training for Meats and Other Foods (MOF) students. - Caribbean Broilers Processing Plant provides samples for poultry inspection practical sessions for MOF and EH students. - The St. Catherine and Kingston and St. Andrew Health Departments assist with supervising of MOF students while they undertake poultry inspection training at the processing plants. - Companies - Urban Development Corporation, Jamaica Flour Mills, Rainforest Seafoods Limited, National Water Commission, Caribbean Cement Company, Ministry of Labour and Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, JAMALCO, WINDALCO and J Wray & Nephew Limited provided on-site training throughout the year to OHS Students. The SPHHT is in collaboration with the St. Kitts Government for the completion of the Supervised Clinical Practicum Placement. Dental Supplies and Sundries were donated by Dr. Michael Brady of Plantation Florida USA. He collected the items from a supply house which was closing down. The supplies were distributed to UWI, UTech, Jamaica and NCU dental/dental hygiene facilities. Dr. Marcia Thelwell-Reid served as Consultant to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) on three projects, to: - Develop concept paper for Jamaica’s Climate Change in Health Project to be presented to the Green Climate Fund– September 2019 - Develop a situational analysis of interventions in water, sanitation, hygiene, solid waste, healthy environments and urban planning for the prevention and control of vectors at national and local level, with emphasis on the management and final disposal of waste tires, considering this is one of the most important vector-borne diseases foci. The findings formed part of the Road Map for Vector Control in the Central America and the Caribbean and was presented at a workshop in Panama on August 1, 2019. - Validate health and clime change country profile of Jamaica – November 2019 - Representatives of DMD year 3-5 students were invited to the Jamaica Dental Association (JDA) Annual Convention at the Melia Braco Hotel in Trelawny, February 2020. Sponsorship was provided by individual members of the JDA and graduates of the DMD programme at UTech, Jamaica. It was the first such meeting with the students of the University of the West Indies and UTech, Jamaica.
