DIVISION OF STUDENT SERVICES AND REGISTRY University of Technology, Jamaica 26 OFFICE OF THE UNIVERSITY REGISTRAR Office of the Assistant Registrar, University Secretariat The University Secretariat continues to provide support for the work of the University Council, Academic Board and several committees of the Council, in keeping with its remit of providing corporate support services to the University Registrar who is the Secretary to the Council and the Academic Board. Research and advice on matters relating to jurisdiction, policy and governance formed an active part of the Unit’s work in response to needs of the University community. An important part of the output of the team was the support provided for the appointment of the new Council which assumed office in 2019 for the period September 9, 2019 to September 8, 2022 and the appointment of the new members to the respective University committees. Some of the key appointments which were facilitated included the appointment of the Acting President, Acting Deputy President, Honorary Treasurer, internal/external examiners, course of study advisory committees, College/Faculty Board representatives to other College Faculty Boards. Council Matters The work of the University Secretariat for the period under review involved support to the work of the University Council and the Academic Board, the main governance bodies of the University. The work of several standing and Ad Hoc committees of the Council were also addressed. The University Secretariat facilitated 38 meetings of these bodies during the period. The Council approved the recommendations from the Gemado 2018 Report on the Council Evaluation exercise in keeping with the recommendations from a smaller group lead by the Pro-Chancellor; the implementation of the agreed changes was next to be addressed. Tenure of Council & Academic Board Members Mr. Kahlil Hutchinson and Mr. Rovel Chambers, incoming Students’ Union President and 1st Vice President Academic Affairs took up seats on the Council and the Academic Board respectively with effect from April 1, 2019. In keeping with the requirement of the UTech, Jamaica Act new members of Council were duly appointed by the Cabinet through the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information. Appointments to the Academic Board were also made by the ProChancellor following the election by members of the respective Faculties/ Colleges or groups. The tenure of the existing members of Council came to an end on August 31, 2019 after being extended by the Minister of Education, Youth and Information from May 9, 2019. The new Council was reappointed for three years with effect from September 9, 2019 to September 8, 2022. All former members were returned with the exception of the following: y Nominees of the Minister of Education, Youth and Information Mrs Sharon Hay- Webster and Mr Garfield Higgins who were replaced by Ms. Adonia Chin and Mr David Douglas.
