UTech, Jamaica 2015-16 Annual Report
2015 World Championship, Beijing China Students’ athletes of the University track and field team represented Jamaica at the 2015 World Championship in Beijing, China held August 22-30, 2015. Jamaica ended the Championships with twelve medals: seven gold, two silver and three bronze medals. This is one fewer than the 2009 Berlin haul of thirteen medals. Of this tally, four gold, one silver and two bronze medals belong to UTech, Jamaica athletes. UTech, Jamaica top performers were: Current Track & Field Student Athletes: Natasha Morrison 4x400 women: 41.07 - Gold Sherica Jackson 4x400 women: 3:19.13 – Gold and 400m, 49.99 - Bronze Elaine Thompson 4 x 100 women: 41.07 – Gold and 200m, 21.66 – Silver Janieve Russell (400m) finals: 5 th position with a personal best of 54.64 Alumni: Shelly-Ann Fraser–Pryce: 10.76 (100m) Gold and 4 x 100 women 41.07 - Gold O’Dayne Richardson Shot put: 21.69 - Bronze Stephanie-Ann McPherson 4x400 Women: 3:19.13- Gold Christina Day 4x400 Women: 3:19.13 - Gold Nesta Carter (4 x 100m men): 37.36 – Gold 2015 World University Championship, Gwangju, South Korea Students’ athletes of the University track team represented Jamaica at the 2015 World University Championship in Gwangju, South Korea held July 8-12, 2015. Jamaica ranked 12 th overall in Track & Field at the championships from among 37 countries. Top results from UTech, Jamaica student athletes at the event were: Kemarley Brown, 2 nd place in the 100m men, 10.12 (now at UWI) Shimayra Williams, 2 nd place in the 100m women, 11.46 Simoya Campbell, 2 nd place in the 800m women, 1:59.26 PB US Rugby League International Invitational UTech, Jamaica, Nathan Campbell from the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies and Marvin Thompson of the Faculty of Science and Sport, were members of the 2015 US Rugby League International Invitational team that represented Jamaica at the USARL Championship that was held November 30 – December 9, 2015 in the USA. The Philadelphia Fight and Jamaica Reggae Warriors are co-champions of the 2015 USARL International Nines after inclement weather interrupted the game right before half-time with scores deadlocked at 6-6. OUTSTANDING STUDENT ATHLETE JISA Student Athlete of the Year Award Jamaica Intercollegiate Sports Association (JISA) Athlete of the Year Award ceremony was held was held on May 11, 2016 at The Mico University College. (Five (5) UTech, Jamaica student athletes were nominated for JISA Student Athlete of the Year Award. UTech Knight table tennis player, Kane Watson, was named Male (local) Student Athlete of the Year. STUDENT ATHLETE WELFARE AND DEVELOPMENT Medical Support for Student Athletes The University provided additional medical insurance coverage for student athletes to cover the high cost associated with sports related injuries.
