UTech, Jamaica 2015-16 Annual Report

Department of Sport “Home of World Class Athletes”  During the period five (5) spor t s were removed from our roster (Golf, Tennis, Field Hockey and T a e k w o n d o ) and the meal p r o g r a m m e d i s c o n t i n u e d . A d d i t i o n a l l y , t h r e e o f ou r c l a s s i c c o m p e t i t i o n s which formed a part of annual f u n d r a i s i n g activities were cancelled. The sports facilities require constant maintenance and replacement of equipment and furnishing. The athletic fields need both rehabilitation and aesthetic work.  In spite of the challenges, however, we had some exciting moments in competition. Four (4) of our student athletes competed at the 2015 World Championship in Beijing China taking home three (3) gold medals, one (1) bronze and a silver. We were winners of the 2016 UWI Pelicans/UTech Knights Sport Championships and a number of our other athletes were selected for national representation in track and field, netball, cricket, rugby and table tennis.  The Department earned approximately Four Million Three Hundred and Fifty Four Thousand Six Hundred Dollars ($4,354,600.00) in revenue from the rental of the sports facilities.  Director of Sport, Mr Anthony Davis returned to head the department after a 4-year absence on study leave during which time Mr Laurence Garriques had acted as Director. COMPETITONS The Department of Sport held two (2) sporting events for the reporting period 2015/2016. These events were the sixth (6 th ) annual Pelican/Knights Sports Championship held in semester one and the Indoor Volleyball Classic held in semester two. The annual classic series of sporting events (track and field & cricket) were not held for the 2015-2016 period due to insufficient funds and unresolved issues. 2015 UWI Pelican/UTech, Jamaica Knights Sports Championship The 2015 UWI Pelicans/UTech, Jamaica Knights Sports Championship was staged successfully Saturday, September 19, 2015 at UTech, Jamaica campus. The Championship saw competition between the UWI Pelicans and the UTech Knights competing in seven (7) sporting events:- male and female football, netball, basketball, cricket, volleyball and rugby. UTech, Jamaica won the Championship 4-3. This is the second time since 2013 that the UTech Knights have won the Championship. UTech, Jamaica Indoor Volleyball Classic The competition was held February 11-14, 2016. In the primary and preparatory competitions two (2) primary schools competed, Lyssons Primary and Mr. Ryan Evelyn, Marketing Coordinator, Reggae Jammin presents the Championship Trophy to the winning UTech, Jamaica Knights team.
