VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | August 2018 6 T he University of Technology, Jamaica through its Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies held its 3rd Biannual International Conference on Humanities and Education from May 24 – 25, 2018 at the Papine Campus, under the theme “Emerging Realities in a Digital Age: Challenges and Opportunities for Developing Societies.” Dr Rohan Lewis, Dean, Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies, in his welcome at the opening ceremony held on Thursday, May 24, 2018 said that Conference provided an opportunity for the Faculty to engage in social discourse that can generate policy ideas around the challenges presented by the digital age. Keynote speaker Mr. Bruno Pouezat, United Nations Resident Coordinator Jamaica, The Bahamas, Bermuda, Turks and Caicos and The Cayman Islands noted pervasiveness of the digital age on all spheres of our lives which affects how we communicate, work, learn and how we live together. He reminded the audience of the importance of ensuring that these opportunities are fully harnessed to accelerate progress towards sustainable development, facilitate the exercise of human rights and improve people’s lives, as well as promote quality education for all. Mr Trevor Forrest, Senior Advisor, Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology brought greetings on behalf of the Minister of Science, Energy and Technology. T he Faculty of Law, Western Campus hosted a Law and Taxation Conference on March 28, 2018 at the Dome Street, Montego Bay Western Campus. The conference was supported by a wide cross section of community members, past and current students, including MP St. James Central - Mr. Heroy Clarke, attorneys, small and micro business operators and members of the general public. The Conference featured two keynote guest speakers - Mr. Dane Patterson, Attorney-at-Law of Patterson Mair Hamilton, specialist in the area of Taxation Law who focused on Tax Avoidance versus Tax Evasion and Mr. Ainsley Powell, The Commissioner General, Tax Administration of Jamaica who spoke on the recently enacted Transfer Pricing Regime in Jamaica. Other presenters from the Faculty of Law included Ms. Tanya Golaub, Programme Leader, and lecturers Ms. Tyeesh Reid, Mr. Dwain Gayle and final year student Ms. Dayna Lee Haughton.
