VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | April 2018 30 O n April 5, 2018, the Career and Placement Unit, Division of Student Services and Registry led the staging of the inaugural President’s Knights Day as part of the University’s 60th Anniversary Celebrations. The Knights Day was developed by Mr. Anthony Davis, Director of Sport and other colleagues. President’s Knights Day kicked off at 12:00 noon with a procession from the students’ bus park and culminated on the front field with an entertainment show with MC, DJ Sparks. The Procession included members of student clubs and societies, members of staff, and specially invited guests, led by the Tivoli Marching Band. In his talk with students, President, Professor Vasciannie, reminded them that as UTech, Jamaica Knights they represent an elite group who are sworn to uphold the University’s Core Values of Integrity, Respect, Excellence, Loyalty, Service, Innovation, Accountability and Team Spirit and who demonstrate the attributes of strength, agility, stamina, intellect and spirit. Guest speaker at the opening ceremony was Hon. Alando Terrelonge, State Minister in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport. The Minister commended UTech, Jamaica for conceptualising and hosting its inaugural President’s Knights Day. “My heartiest congratulations on this major move by the University of Technology for inaugurating the President’s Knights Day to celebrate students of the institution,” the Minister said, adding that “the act of an institution of learning in celebrating its students is most worthy and laudable.” The fact that the University is celebrating its students shows that it appreciates the focus of the youth and the role that they will play in national development.” Minister Terrelonge said the ‘Knight’,which is the official mascot of UTech, not only depicts the characters of knights but “depicts an academic community prepared to defend all that is good and true for its own community and for the nation as a whole, parading the virtues of integrity, respect, excellence, service, accountability and, most importantly, team spirit.” Inaugural President’s Knights Day Professor Stephen Vasciannie, President, UTech, Jamaica addressing students gathered at the Pavilion, UTech, Jamaica Papine Campus, front field at the inaugural President’s Knights Day held on Thursday, April 5, 2018.
