VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | April 2018 12 Ambassador MalgorzataWasilewska, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Jamaica, Belize, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands and the Cayman Islands delivered the keynote address at the College’s signature event – the Caribbean Economic Integration Summit held on March 21, 2018 at the Shared Facilities Building, Papine Campus. In her presentation titled Best Practices in Regionalism: The Case of the European Union, Ambassador Wasilewska noted that regional integration has the potential to promote peace and stability; facilitate a global response to global challenges; and advance economic development. She cited the experience of Poland, her homeland, which has more than doubled its GDP in the 14 years since it joined the European Union. She also said noted that while the process of EU integration had its challenges, the lessons learned by its 28 member states were relevant to any region which wanted to deepen its own regional integration arrangement. She reiterated the commitment of the European Union to Caribbean integration through its mechanisms of financial cooperation; political dialogue; and trade policies, such as the CARIFORUM EU Economic Partnership Agreement. T he College of Business and Management marked its annual “Celebration of Excellence” March 18- 28, 2018. The celebration was held under the theme, “Encouraging Regional Economic Integration for National Growth and Development” and featured a number of activities aimed at showcasing student, faculty and staff excellence. These included a Caribbean Economic Integration forum, SHTM Day, a JDSEEL Student Symposium, SOBA Student Conference and Customer Care days held at the Papine and Western Campuses, TIC Open House, church services across the Corporate Area and the COBAM Awards Ceremony. See highlights of the Celebration of Excellence below. Hon. Fayval Williams Addresses SOBA Students’ Conference Hon. Fayval Williams, MP, Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service was keynote speaker at the Opening Ceremony of the UTech, Jamaica School of Business Administration 23rd Annual Students’ Conference held on March 27, 2018 at the Jamaica Conference Centre. The annual Students’ Conference is led by final year students enrolled in the seven academic majors in the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) programme offered by the School of Business Administration, namely Accounting, Finance, Production and Operations Management, Marketing, General Management, Human Resource Management and Administrative Information Systems Management. Minister Williams challenged the students to contribute to the growth of the country by “being more productive in the workplace, by starting a small business, investing in your homeland, and generating new ideas and acting on them.” The Minister took the time to explain to students the importance of maintaining fiscal discipline in Jamaica’s economy through the stringent adherence to the spending rule.
