VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | April 2018 10 A Jamaican team comprising three University of Technology, Jamaica Students of the School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) and one student from the University of The West Indies Mona won the ‘Hack Against Hunger’ Hackathon held in Geneva Switzerland at The United Nation’s World Summit on Information Technology held March 19- 23, 2018. The team comprising SCIT students Juleen Gentles, Odain Brown and Joshua Thompson and Chinelle Miller, Medical Science student, UWI emerged winners with their web and mobile-based application on increasing food security. The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2018 represents the world’s largest annual gathering of the ‘ICT for development’ community. The annual WSIS Forum is a global multi-stakeholder platform facilitating the implementation of the WSIS Action Lines for advancing sustainable development. The Forum provides an opportunity for information exchange, knowledge creation and sharing of best practices, while identifying emerging trends and fostering partnerships, taking into account the evolving Information and Knowledge Societies. The Forum served as a key platform for discussing the role of ICT as a means of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and targets of the United Nations. U niversity of Technology, Jamaica Faculty of Engineering and Computing students emerged third place winners in the Software Hackathon Competition hosted by the Institute of Engineering and Electronics (IEEE) Southeast Region 3 Conference at the Hilton Hotel in St Petersburg, Florida, USA held from April 19 -22, 2018. Over thirty institutions participated in the competition. The IEEE Southeast-con region 3 conference is an annual event at which students from a range of teaching and research Universities have an opportunity to participate in Software, Robotics, Ethics, Website, T-Shirt, and research paper competitions, as well as deliver presentations within the cross disciplinary areas of Engineering and Computing.
