Paulton Gordon, Director, Community Service and Development, UTech, Jamaica was elected new president of the Jamaica Basketball Association (JBA) at the Association’s 2018 annual general meeting. Gordon, who held the post as second vice-president in the previous administration, succeeded acting interim president Calvin Martin, who took over the helm after former president, Dr Mark Bloomfield, resigned the post last year. Gordon defeated Major Clifton Lumsden, the current president of the Business House Basketball Association with 14 votes to 11. Anthony Davis Appointed new Meet Director for annual Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships T he Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) appointed Mr. Anthony Davis, Director of Sport, UTech, Jamaica as the new Meet Director charged with ensuring the smooth running of the annual 2018 Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships five-day Meet held at the National Stadium. Mr. Davis is a former national sprinter who has spent several years in track and field at the administrative level. In congratulating all three members of staff on their appointments to national service, the President, Professor Stephen Vasciannie noted that “the University of Technology, Jamaica will enjoy the recognition that your election and achievements in office will bring to the institution.” Dr. Sean Thorpe Elected President, Jamaica Computer Society D r. Sean Thorpe, Head, School of Computing and Information Technology has been elected President of the Jamaica Computer Society (JCS). Dr. Thorpe joined the university in 2003 as a Lecturer and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2013. A Fulbright Visiting Scholar in 2009, he was the 2014 recipient of the university’s President’s Research Initiative Award. He has served on a number of committees, presented papers at numerous conferences and workshops, and has participated on public panel discussions. In 2013 he became the first person to be awarded the PhD in Computer Science from the University of Technology, Jamaica. UTech, Jamaica congratulates the following members of the university community who were recently elected to positions of national service.
