COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Child Care and Development Degree course aims to produce graduates with the requisite professional competencies that will enable them to perform prominent roles in child development and education from birth to 7 years.

COURSE GOALS & OBJECTIVES

The course is designed to prepare graduates to:

1. Equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitude to meet the needs of the developing child.
2. Assist students to develop techniques, which help children, achieve optimum development.
3. Train students to be able to establish and effectively manage child care agencies.
4. Train students in the use of technology to stimulate children and enhance learning capabilities.
5. Provide basic foundations in curriculum planning, development and educational administration necessary for the operation of a basic school.
6. Enable students to develop an awareness of the health care and nutritional needs of young children.
7. Equip students with the principles and skills necessary to teach children.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

This course provides an opportunity for participants to gain new insights and skills applicable to the field of Child Care and Development and related areas such as Early Childhood Education.

Graduates will be equipped with specific skills for managing and working with children as well as transferable skills (e.g. communication and data presentation skills; them and collaborative working skills and analytical skills) which will enable them to work with other related professionals and be eligible for employment in a variety of child Care institutions and programmes as teachers, administrators, supervisors, social workers and/or care givers.

The will also be quipped to set up and manage their own institutions and child care facilities/agencies.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy one the following qualifications:
- Passes in five (5) subjects: General Certificate Education (GCE) Ordinary Level A, B, & C or Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) General Proficiency Levels 1, 2 and 3 (as of June 1998) in English Language, Biology or Food & Nutrition, Mathematics and two other pass in an approved subject.

- Passes in three (3) subjects: General Certificate Education (GCE) Ordinary Level A, B, & C or Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) General Proficiency Levels 1, 2 and 3 (as of June 1998) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology or Food & Nutrition, plus a Certificate in Child Care & Development. In addition, applicants must pass a final selection interview, which may be comprised of two parts.

The compulsory subjects must be obtained at no more than two sittings. Candidates with other types of academic qualifications will be evaluated in accordance with the University’s regulations governing academic equivalence.
