We are not content to be consumers of knowledge.
Nothing succeeds like success. The simple truism gives logic to our embrace of the phenomenal track record of the College of Health Sciences within the University of Technology (UTech). The UTech brandis well known and respected. We are justifiably proud of the contribution that our University, “The People’s University”,hasmade to national and regional development. Now, we are no longer content to be consumers of knowledge, but intend to make our mark as producers of knowledge. In the same way that our athletes have instructed the world in the winning ways of competitive sports, we are inspired to impact the globe with research outputs and transformative ideas in positive ways.
I take up the post of Dean ofthe College of Health Sciences at a time when change is of the essence. Seismic shifts in the national and international environment challenge us to be innovative and adaptive in order to enhance our positioning. It is critical that we prepare our graduates to be globally competitive while encouraging them to be public service oriented and decent human beings. In many ways, technology is our friend. It is our intention to exploit the technological boon to expand access to learning and open doors to educational advancement for those who seek knowledge.
As a proud graduate of UTech, I have benefitted from the solid contribution of the first-class and committed Faculty. These characteristics remain the hallmark of this educational institution. Many of our staff are leaders of distinction in their professional spheres.
The tradition of innovation and excellence continues. Two (2) new schools - The Caribbean School of Nursing - UTech and the School of Allied Health and Wellness now join the School of Pharmacy, as centres of academic excellence.Going forward, through a new Health Research Translation Unit (HERTU), we will focus in a laser-like fashion on developing the most appropriate processes of shaping and taking knowledge about the benefits of health science research to the people where, ultimately, true value is realized. We will support national efforts to shape perceptions of disease and notions of wellness with consequent reduction of the burden of disease on the national purse.
This is an exciting time to be a part of the College of Health Sciences at UTech. New ideas... new programmes....new approaches.Embedded in the solid foundation of past performances and successes, our College is a place where health professionals benefit from advancement courses. We encourage and facilitate multi-disciplinary approaches, entrepreneurship, life-long learning and community engagement.
Finally, if you are deciding on a career in the Health Sciences, I encourage you to make the College of Health Sciences at UTech, your academic home. Consider the exciting and relevant suite of programmes that we offer in making your choice!
