History of the School of Mathematics and Statistics

The School of Mathematics and Statics is committed to providing excellence in the teaching of Mathematics, Statistics, Research Methodology and Operational Research at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. We encourage the growth of a culture of love for Mathematics in Jamaica as well as in the wider Caribbean through Mathematics Programme of Studies designed to improve the knowledge and an appreciation of the discipline. We are also engaged in the teaching and training of professionals in Mathematics and Applied areas such as Applied Statistics, Actuarial Science and the teaching of Mathematics. Through teaching those who will themselves carry forward our mission we will extend the benefits of our mathematical understanding. Research is important in the nurturing of the Mathematics Culture. Creating a Mathematics Culture is even more important for developing countries as the benefits for such a culture will help to empower individuals and enable them to solve real world problems.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics (SOMAS) is located in Kingston and Montego Bay. The addresses for the Campuses are: The Main Campus - Papine 237 Old Hope Rd Kingston 6 The Montego Bay Campus, Dome Street Montego Bay, St James. The School of Mathematics and Statistics is committed to fostering a caring and empathetic environment, producing graduates in Pure and Applied Mathematics and Statistics of international repute who positively impact national, regional and development.
