World Junior Championship in Athletics
Jamaica
recently hosted the 9th IAAF Coca-Cola World Junior Championships in athletics
July 16-21, 2002. In reality the best junior athletes in the world were our
guests. The University of Technology, Jamaica was part host to our guests,
accommodating approximately 200 athletes from countries such as Qatar, Ethiopia,
South Africa, Poland, Sweden and of course our own Jamaican athletes.
All staff members of the Department of Sports
were involved as volunteers for the championship. Major rolls carried out by the
Department’s head are: -
Anthony Davis served as Competitions Director and
Chairman of Competition Committee
The auditorium and surrounding sporting
facilities were used for training, recreation, and entertainment. The auditorium
was also the main office for hospitality and accommodations volunteers.
The IAAF president and technical delegates
described the event as the best ever.
Commonwealth Games 2002
Dennis Johnson
served as head coach for the Jamaica team at the Commonwealth Games held in
Manchester, England July 26-31,2002. During his visit to Manchester, Mr. Johnson
was interviewed by the largest black newspaper, The VOICE and by BBC. A
documentary on the History of Sprinting in Jamaica was also made. Included were:

Jamaica had a record haul of 14 medals at the
Commonwealth Games (4 gold, 6 silver, 4 bronze).
World Cup - Madrid, Spain
Dennis Johnson and Frank Wright (Dominican)
served as team coach for the Americas World Cup held in Madrid, Spain September
2002.

Launch of Golf Elective
The Department of Sports with the help of the
Jamaica Golf Association launched the introduction of Golf as a part of the
University sports electives at a luncheon held February 2002. Attendees

The Jamaica Golf Association donated 17 sets of
golf clubs and bags. Mr. Williams conducted a demonstration of the sport
including club handling to students.
Students Highlights 2001/2002
9.1 Netball
Elaine
Davis
and Michala Gibson represented Jamaica National team at the Commonwealth
Games 2002 held in Manchester, England. They were bronze medal winners
Elaine Davis was the leading goal shooter.
9.2 Volleyball
Mark Lewis represented Jamaica Intercollegiate
Sports Association in the World University Beach Volleyball Championship held in
Guadeloupe June 19-23, 2002. The team was outclassed by their more
experienced opponents, but put in some worthy performances, which augurs well
for the future. Other member institutions of CUSA to participate in the
championship were UWI (Mona), BCC and UWI (Cave Hill).

Sports Day Picture Highlight
Activities of the
HPTC 2001/2002

President of the IAAF,
Mr. Lamine Diack visited the center in March 2002 and met with Dr. Rae Davis,
Teddy McCook and Dennis Johnson.

The Regional
Development Centre of the IAAF donated videocassettes, hurdles, weights and
other training equipment March 2002.

The High Performance
Centre in conjunction with the Regional Development Center (RDC) of the IAAF
conducted three (3) international coaching courses in the Alfred Sangster
Auditorium between the months of July – August 2002.

Course Description
The course of study is designed to give students
the opportunity to further enhance their personal, educational and vocational
developmental opportunities through continued participation in a selected sports
option. It will incorporate both a theory (module 1-1 credit) and a practical
(module 2-2 credits). The latter module will cater for both university
representation and those wishing to participate in a second option of their
choosing.
