SPORTS Electives: Golf
The
Administration of the University of Technology, Jamaica decided to promote
the introduction of Golf as an elective in the Department of Sports in
February, 2002.
Mr. Dennis Johnson, the Director of Sports
along with his members of staff welcomed all the students who selected golf
as a 3-credit elective for the 2002 / 2003 academic year.
The term elective refers to the fact that
students may choose the course they decide to take from a menu of courses
offered to them either within their area of specialization or within a
subject category.
Dr. Rae
Davis, President of the University of Technology, Jamaica reiterated the
University’s commitment to extending the educational experiences of
students.
Mr. Arthur Zaidie and Mr. Gordon Hutchinson
joined with UTech to encourage and promote golf, and as a result seventeen
(17) sets of golf equipment were presented to
the Department of Sports on behalf of the
Jamaica Golf Association.
The academic year 2001 / 2003 will always
be remembered and cherished by the first set of twenty four (2 4) students
who participated in the programme.
Golf as an elective was designed for
students to:
-
Foster social
growth and enhance the total process of human learning by which .
knowledge is imparted, faculties trained and skills developed..
-
Acquire
cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills and prepare for the changing
roles in the social, economic and global environment that is constantly
changing.
-
Motivate
students to develop an appreciation of golf as a disciplined sport which
is no longer a sporting activity for the “Rich and famous”
-
Encourage the
development of sound moral values and standards of personal integrity, and
respect for others while learning golfing skills which will enable them to
visit golf courses and meet other golfers nationally and internationally.

Students
learning golf at UTech always express their gratitude for the encouragement
and help they usually receive from the Pro at the Constant Spring Golf Club,
Mr. Whyle Lopez who usually make the Caymanas Golf And Country Club
available for them to practice their golfing skills, Mr. Carl Welsh
President of the Manchester Golf Club and his team for providing sporting
apparel for student golfers, Mr. Dennis Johnson our Sports Director and Mrs.
Gradle Grant the Golfing coach in the Sports Department.
