The University of Technology,
Jamaica (UTech) was established in 1958, originally under the
name The Jamaica Institute of Technology. In 1959, the name was
changed to the College of Arts Science and Technology (CAST).
Granted University status in September 1995, UTech is at the
pinnacle of technical education in the English-speaking
Caribbean, providing managers and skilled professionals for
Jamaica and the region in a wide diversity of disciplines.
The campus of 18 hectares lies
to the east of Hope Gardens on Old Hope Road. It is served by
several bus routes, and is within walking distance of the
University of the West Indies Mona Campus, several churches and
the growing shopping area of Papine.
Recruiting students at the
secondary and post-secondary levels, the University has grown
from the original 56 students to over 9,000 in 50 years. It
offers advanced professional and technical training through its
five faculties: The Built Environment, Business and Management,
Education and Liberal Studies, Engineering and Computing and
Health and Applied Science and Law.
To meet the needs of business
and industry for more trained staff and the upgrading of
existing employees, the University operates full-time, part-time
day release, evening and modular programmes, which vary from 1
to 5 years in duration. While the level of certification will
depend on the length, all programmes are designed to meet the
need for middle management staff whether at the professional or
sub-professional level.

The Sports Department provides a sporting environment that enhances the development of quality competitive and recreational sporting activities, which improve leadership skills, teamwork, discipline, and character-building.
