UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, JAMAICA SIGNS MOU WITH DIGICEL

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) and Digicel (Jamaica) Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 to establish a framework of co-operation between both entities and to establish mutually beneficial programmes, projects and activities.

Also signing similar MOU’s with Digicel were: The University of the West Indies, The University College of the Caribbean (at whose Kingston campus the signing took place), and Northern Caribbean University. The programmes, projects and activities developed under the agreement will be directed toward:

  • Providing graduates/students with an opportunity to complement their formal education with “real world” career-related experience.
  • Widening the Digicel recruiting network to attract high potential candidates from our Universities.
  • Strengthening the partnership between Digicel and our Universities through Graduate Recruitment, Summer Internship Programmes, Curriculum Development, Scholarships and Bursaries, and Mentorship Programmes.

Guest Speaker at the signing function was the Hon. Andrew Holness, Minister of Education, who congratulated Digicel and the participating universities for helping to “bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace”. The minister noted that his Ministry intends to place great emphasis on “mentorship and apprenticeship programmes which will seek to achieve a seamless articulation between schools and workplaces”.
