Dean's Message

It is indeed my pleasure to welcome to the Faculty of Health & Applied Science all new and returning students for the academic year 2007/2008. A special welcome is extended to the new students of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing course who constitute the first batch of entrants to this new addition to the Faculty’s courses offerings.

The Faculty of Health & Applied Science has been in existence for approximately 48 years, being the first Department to be instituted after the inception of the College of Arts, Science & Technology, (CAST) in 1958. The Faculty has evolved over the years from a mere Service Department to a full-fledged Faculty offering a total of fourteen courses of study, (two Certificates, two Associate Degrees, nine Bachelors/Bachelor of Science and one Master of Philosophy courses).

The courses offered in the Faculty are distinguished by the flexibility in design and delivery modes. The mix of degree, associate degree and certificate courses are delivered as full-time, part-time, evening, day release, modular summer or combinations thereof.

The Faculty of Health and Applied Science, formerly, the Science Department, has enjoyed a long and enviable tradition of offering courses which satisfy the national and regional manpower needs. The disciplines are usually work place oriented, practical-based and scientifically and technologically relevant.

The accreditation of courses in the Faculty of Health and Applied Science has become a priority issue. Three of the Undergraduate Bachelor’s degree courses (Medical Technology, Pharmacy and Health Sciences) have obtained accreditation from the University Council of Jamaica, and two others (Environmental Health/Public Health Inspection and public Health Nursing) are awaiting the accreditation report from the Accreditation Body.

The faculty is poised to expand into a College of the Health Sciences with many schools comprising a range of health disciplines including Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, Sports Science and several other Health Professions.

The Faculty of Health and Applied Science strives for excellence in the delivery of all its offerings. In keeping with the University's mission, it is committed to providing high quality and flexible courses of study.

If your interest lies within the health profession or a science-based/science education career, the Faculty of Health & Applied Science is the place to be.

I want to remind each of you however, that success comes with hard work and discipline. I therefore challenge you to get adjusted quite early to the University environment and then settle down to the business of achieving your academic goals.

I extend a warm welcome to all prospective students and encourage you to become a part of our unique family. We offer you a secure, bright and successful future.
